맛집 어플 옐프에서 지역설정을 한인타운인 둘루스로 설정하면 장수장이 상위에 뜰 정도로 인기가 있는 한식집이다. 언젠가 한번은 가봐야지 생각만 해왔다가 장수장에 꼭 가봐야겠다고 생각이 들게 된 계기가 있는데, 얼마 전 남북 지도자가 만나 냉면을 함께 먹으면서 전세계적으로 냉면이 평화를 상징하는 음식이 되었다. 그때 애틀랜타에 본거지를 둔 CNN에서 한국인 셰프를 초청해서 냉면을 함께 만들고 시식하는 걸 방송에 내보낸 적이 있었다. 그때 그 셰프님이 하시는 말씀이 냉면 재료를 구하기 위해서 장수장에 문의를 했는데 친절하시게도 방송에 필요한 냉면 재료를 모두 무료로 제공하셨다는 것이었다. 그 인터뷰를 보고 꼭 한번 들러봐야겠다는 생각이 들었는데 이번 둘루스 여행에서 가볼 기회가 생겼다.

Jang Su Jang is a popular Korean restaurant in Duluth which has good reviews on Yelp. I was casually thinking about going to the restaurant someday. And this interview made me want to go to Jang Su Jang so badly. There was a summit that two Korean leaders met and shared Naeng Myeon -Cold Noodle- and the dish became a symbol of peace. CNN based in Atlanta invited a Korean chef to their station and asked her to make Naeng Myeon for them to try. The Chef interviewed that she was able to prepare all the ingredients because of Jang Su Jang. They let her have Naeng Myeon ingredients without charging her any penny. They thought it was an honor to be a part of the peaceful progress and introducing our food globally by preparing the ingredients.

상대적으로 아담해보였던 외관과는 달리 내부는 생각보다 크고 분위기 있었다. 손님들로 이미 북적북적했는데 나중에 보니 우린 운 좋게도 기다림없이 들어간 것이었다. 금세 몰려든 사람들로 테이블을 기다리는 손님들로 현관이 북적였다.

The outside looked small but when we walked in, it was bigger than we thought. Many people were already having lunch. We were able to have a table without waiting. But there were more and more people coming, by the time we left the restuarant, there was a long line.

메뉴판은 한 4페이지가 되는 것 같았는데 다양한 메뉴들로 빼곡했다. 우리는 이미 봐둔 보쌈정식(1인분)과 LA스타일 갈비를 주문하기로 했다. 처음엔 순두부찌개도 하나 더 시켜서 같이 먹을까했는데 너무 욕심인 것 같아 만약 먹다가 모자라면 그때 시키자하고 일단 두 메뉴만 주문했는데 지금 생각해봐도 하나 더 안시킨 게 정말 다행이다.

The menu was an almost 4 page thick book with different dishes. We already picked dishes we wanted. I ordered 'Bo Ssam Jung Sik' meaning steamed porkbelly with vegetables to wrap it with. Skylar ordered LA style short ribs. We were going to order a tofu stew but we didn't. I'm glad we didn't order another dish, we couldn't have finished all the dishes then.

The interior was like fancy authentic Korean style. The ladies there were all nice.

반찬들이 본격적으로 서빙되기 전에 받은 배추된장국과 머스터드&새우젓. 스카일러가 머스터드는 왜 주는거냐고 국에 넣는거냐는(?) 질문을 해서 이건 내가 보쌈을 시켜서 나온 거라고 알려주었다. ㅋㅋ

At first, they served a refreshing stew with soft cabbage. My mom used to cook it for me when I was young. Also, I got mustard sauce and salty little shrimps that goes with steamed pork belly later. Skylar didn't know what they were for and asked me if I was supposed to put some of each into the soup. lol.

얼마 지나지 않아 다양한 반찬들이 나왔다. 그 중에서도 내가 좋아하는 건 다시다 무침. 스카일러는 오이무침과 잡채, 그리고 김치를 특히 좋아했다.

at a Korean restaurant, you always get many kinds of side dishes. My favorite was the kelp seasoned with vinegar. Skylar liked "Job Chae" -glass noodle dish-, Kimchi and cucumber Kimchi.

한식집에서 매번 불고기만 시키는 스카일러에게 이번엔 갈비를 한번 주문해보라고 설득했다. 스카일러도 마음에 들어했지만 지방 부위를 싫어하고 뜯어먹기에 불편했다는 점에 다음번엔 또다시 불고기를 주문할 거라고 했다. ㅋㅋ

I got to convince Skylar to try something different besides Bulgogi this time. He ordered "Gal Bi" beef short ribs marinated with soy sauce. He liked the flavor but he thought it had fatty parts and was hard to eat in dignity lol. So he will go back to Bulgogi next time.

내가 시킨 보쌈은 누린내 하나 없이 촉촉하게 삶아진데다가 살코기와 지방이 적절하게 있어서 정말 맛있었다. 지방 부위를 싫어하는 스카일러도 정말 맛있다고 했다.

This is Bo Ssam -steamed porkbelly- I ordered. It's very tender and I like the fatty part of porkbelly. Somehow it gives you more textures and flavors. Even Skylar who hates fatty parts likes porkbelly and he liked my dish too. It was served with soft salted cabbage, sweet radish Kimchi, sliced pickled radish and jalapenos.

무김치는 아삭아삭해서 느끼할 수 있는 보쌈의 맛을 적절히 잡아주고 매콤한 고추장아찌도 매운 맛을 좋아하는 나에게는 정말 좋은 반찬이었다.

You can eat the meat with Kimchi or wrap it with the sliced radish (white&red), you can dip the meat into the little shrimp sauce (it's just salty.) or you can wrap the porkbelly with the cabbage.

순두부찌개를 안시켰던 게 정말 다행이었다. 이렇게 먹고나니 둘다 배가 산더미처럼 부풀아올랐다는. 맛도 정말 좋고 친절하신 직원분들 덕분에 맛집 장수장이 더 호감인 이유다.

After all, we both were miserable. It didn't look like not much food, but when we actually had them, it was a loooot. They tasted great and it was definitely worth it to come to Jang Su Jang.
