반려묘 일기 : 벨라는 누구? New Family Member, Bella

벨라는 갈색 아메리칸 숏헤어 여자 고양이다. 아빠 고양이 '힐빌리'는 아메숏 고양이 대회에서 2등을 수상한 화려한 전적을 가진 고양이다. 엄마 고양이 '다이너시티'는 은색 아메숏으로 무늬가 엄청 예쁘고 4마리의 아기 고양이를 출산했다. (은색 남자, 갈색 남자, 갈색 여자, 은색 여자 고양이). 벨라는 8월 29일에 태어났다.

Bella is a female brown American Shorthair cat. Her Dad named Hillbilly is the second best champion cat in 2017. Her mom is a silver American Shorthair and she delivered 4 cats -one is Bella, the other brown cat is a boy, one blue tabby classic girl and a silver boy. - Bella was born on August 29th, 2018.

Name

고양이를 만나기까지 떠오르는 이름이 없었다. 한번도 애완동물을 키워본 적이 없어서 더 그런 것 같기도 했고 마음 한 구석에는 직접 고양이를 봤을 때 영감이 떠오를 것 같았다. 사실 사진으로 봤을 때 은색 아메숏 여아가 제일 마음에 들었는데 실제로 브리더를 찾아갔을 때 가장 눈에 띈건 벨라였다. 아무래도 무늬가 더 선명해서 그랬던 것 같다. 최종적으로 라떼, 벨라 그리고 터거(캣츠에 나오는 럼텀터거에서 따옴) 세 이름을 두고 고민이 많았는데 직장동료가 벨라라는 이름이 이탈리어와 라틴어로 아름답다라는 의미가 있다고 해서 최종적으로 결정하게 되었다.

We couldn't think of any good name for our cat till we met her. Maybe because I didn't have any pet before. But I thought once I saw her in person, a perfect name would come to mind. When we only saw pictures of the 4, silver female kitten was my favorite. And we saw the kittens in person, we both liked the brown female kitten -Bella- the most. I think it was because Bella had darker & clearer patterns. Anyways, after that, I thought of three names which were Bella, Latte and Tugger (from Rum Tum Tugger -musical Cats-). I couldn't choose one. My coworker Jane told me that Bella has a meaning of Beautiful in Italian and Latin. So we decided to go with the name and the name rolls off the tongue as well.

How we found her

스카일러와 나는 유기묘를 입양해볼까 생각도 했었지만 아무래도 반려동물이라는 것이 한번 들이면 죽을 때까지 보살펴주고 책임을 저야한다는 생각이 확고했던 우리기에 적어도 첫 고양이는 건강한 고양이 부모에게서 나온 고양이를 키우는 게 좋겠다고 생각했다. 주변 사람들이 공짜로 고양이를 이곳 저곳에서 받을 수 있다고 했지만 우리 부부에게 반려묘라는게 단순한 동물이 아니고 진짜 '가족'이기 때문에 신중하게 고르고 싶었다. 그래서 스카일러와 내가 고려한 품종묘 중에 가장 튼튼하고 유전병 확률이 적은 아메숏을 알아보게 되었고 운이 좋게도 우리가 사는 알라바마 주에 정말 좋은 브리더를 페이스북에서 찾을 수 있었다.

Skylar and I did think about adopting a cat from a shelter. Also, people tried to convince us to get a free cat from someone they know, but we wanted to make sure to start with a healthy cat since our cat will be not only an animal but also a family member to us once we decide to have it. American shorthair has the least chance of genetic disease, and there was a good american shorthair cat breeder in Alabama.

우리가 고양이 분양을 받길 원한다고 메세지를 보내자 브리더분은 간단하게는 우리 신상과 미래 계획까지 물어보셨다. 질문이 꽤 많았고 심도있어서 고양이를 신중하게 키우고 보살피는 분이라는 걸 느낄 수 있었다. 새끼고양이들이 어미를 더이상 필요로 하지 않는 대략 3개월차까지 브리더분이 키우시고 그 이후에 새로운 가족들에게 보내진다고 한다. 그래서 벨라는 아마 11월 말쯤에 우리 곁으로 올 것 같다.

We found her on Facebook and messaged her that we were interested in her cats. She asked us from a simple question to a feature family plan. We could tell that she was looking for good & trustworthy owners for her cats. She said, she keeps kittens for about 3 weeks till they don't need their mom. So Bella should be with us by the end of November.

Meeting the Breeder

브리더분이 하시는 말씀이 알라바마 주에서 이정도 돈을 지불해서 분양해가는 사람이 극히 드물다고 한다. 그래서 주 고객들은 캘리포니아나 워싱턴 D.C. 등 비행기를 타고 와서라도 분양을 받는 분들이라고 한다. 그래서 우리 같은 로컬이 더욱 반갑다고 하셨다. 아직 분양받기까지에는 시간이 많이 남았지만, 새끼 고양이들을 보러 한번 방문해보는 건 어떠냐고 하시길래 시간 약속을 잡고 방문했다.

The breeder said, she didn't have many local buyers who were willing to pay that much for a good cat. Usually her buyers are from California or Washington D.C. and even fly to her house to get good kittens. She was excited to have local buyers and asked us to visit her to see her cats!

처음 벨라를 본 날, 태어난 지 6주차 되던 아깽이 벨라. 정말 너무 너무 작고 귀여워서 손에 드는 것 조차 조심스러웠다. ㅋㅋ

I took these pictures when we saw her in person! She was only 6 weeks old. She was so small that I was afraid even to hold her lol.

작고 소중한 벨라... 남편 운동화 한짝모다 작았던 그녀..ㅎ

She was smaller than Skylar's shoe.

자매와 형제가 있어서 티격태격 개구지게 놀던 아깽이들. 오른쪽은 벨라 엄마인 다이너시티. 새끼 곁에 낯선 사람들이 온 건데도 엄청 얌전하고 친근하게 대하는 데다가 저 털이 엄청 엄청 부드러워서 놀라웠다.

They were busy playing with each other. Right picture is of her mama, Dynasty. Even though we (aka strangers) were wandering around her kittens, she was so sweet. Also I was so surprised by her soft hair!

그렇게 벨라를 만나고 온 지 2주가 지나 이제는 8주차 아깽이가 된 벨라의 모습. 브리더분께 사진을 요청ㅠㅠ해서 받았는데 정말 너무 귀엽다. 그새 이 정도 자라다니.. 조만간 한번 더 방문해서 벨라 사진을 많이 찍어올 예정이다. ㅠㅠ 이제는 우리 가족 구성원이 제이드앤스카일러에서 벨라가 추가 되었다. ㅋㅋ 벨라 공주님을 잘 모실 두 집사는 그녀를 애타게 기다리고 있다........

It had been 2 weeks since we saw Bella. Now she is 8 weeks old. We asked the breeder for some photos of Bella. She still looks so cute. I can't believe she grow this much T_T I don't want to miss any moment! We should see her very soon. She is a good addition to our family. Skylar and I are ready to take good care of her.
