[미국가드닝] 정원에 단풍나무 심기 Japanese Maple Tree : English Lace

 

저번에 오사카주키라는 단풍나무를 온라인에서 구입했는데 그곳이 알고보니 수상한(?) 혹평이 자자한 웹사이트였다. 나무인데도 무슨 초화마냥 작은 사이즈로 와서 실망했었고, 내가 원하는 크기가 되려면 적어도 2-30년은 기다려야 할 판이었다. 나의 단풍나무 사랑은 거기서 그칠 수 없었는데, 이번엔 구글 후기를 꼼꼼히 읽어보고 후기가 좋은 곳에서 그것도 비교적 앨라배마와 가까운 곳에 위치한 Nursery(묘목 농원..?)에서 구입했다.

I bought a Japanese maple tree named Osakazuki from this website last time. I got such a tiny tree for the amount I paid. Turns out that website was kinda scam with very bad reveiws on google. It would take me 20-30 yrs to enjoy the maple tree. So I wasn't very happy with the purchase and wanted another one. I checked through google reviews and picked a good nursery that is located in North Carolina which is not too far from Alabama. I ordered another Japanese maple tree with lace leaf from their website.

 

 

 

호기심 발동한 벨라, 나무 냄새맡으러 출동

 

 

와, 같은 값주고 산 건데 이전에 산 단풍나무와 크기가 엄청 차이났다. 내가 고른 건 English Lace라는 일본단풍나무다. 단풍나무 잎 중에 레이스처럼 굉장히 얇은 종류가 있는데, 그 잎을 가진 대부분의 단풍나무는 늘어지는 나무다. 내가 고른 이 English Lace 종은 여전히 늘어지는 형태이지만 그래도 위로 뻗는 형질이 개중에 가장 강하다고 한다. 원래 보통의 레이스 잎을 가진 단풍나무들은 키가 아주 작아서, 머리카락을 주체 못하는? 그런 모습이다; 또 한가지 고려사항은 키가 엄청나게 크게 자라는 단풍나무는 제외시켰는데, 이 나무는 10년 후 최대 12ft (3.6m)까지만 자란다고 한다.

I couldn't be happier with the size of this tree! I bought one gallon tree, but looked bigger than that in person. There are maple trees with very thin lacey leaves. Most of them are dwarf weeping trees. I wanted a upright maple tree with lace leaves specifically. It wasn't easy to find one but I did find it. Also another important thing was that I wanted a mid-size tree that isn't vigorous or too tall in the end. This one grows upto 12ft in 10 years.

아직 겨울이라 오후 6시인데도 해가 빨리 진다. 심지어 오랜만에 영하로 떨어진 날이라 식물한테 너무 혹독할 거 같아서 심는 건 다음 날로 미루기로 했다. 대충 어디에 심을지 자리만 보고 집으로 들여놓음. 위로 곧게 자라는 형태이더라도 본래의 늘어지는 성질 때문인지 중간에 가지가 확 꺽인게 보인다.

The sun goes down pretty early in Winter. Yesterday it was so cold that I didn't want to plant this tree in the ground. I just checked where to plant it next day. Even though this tree is supposed to be upright, it is still a weeping tree. You can see where the tree was bent as it grew.

 

 

 

 

 

다음 날 점심, 삽을 들고 어제 정해 둔 곳 땅을 팠다. 땅 파기는 이쯤되면 식은 죽 먹기~ 앨라배마의 여름은 아주 뜨거워서 단풍나무가 오후에 그늘에 있을 수 있는 이 곳으로 정했다...!

Next day, I digged where I liked last night. Digging is the easiest part of gardening lol. I liked this spot because it gives the tree afternoon shade in hot summer.

 

 

 

 

 

 

다글 다글 올라오는 수선화와 키작은 붓꽃들...! 저 뒤 그들에 보면 튤립들이 올라온 것도 보인다.

동쪽을 향하게 심었기 때문에 나무가 해를 따라서 좀 더 앞으로 숙여주길 바라는 마음..

I planted the tree toward the east. I hope it will follow the morning sun and get straighted more.
