얼마 전에 우리가 사는 지역에 토네이도가 왔었는데 그 때 우박이 내려서 차 전체에 우박 자국이 남았다. 나야 차알못이라 그렇게 티가 많이 나는 것 같지도 않았는데 차 수리점에서 총 287개가 넘는 우박 자국이 생긴데다가 연식이 오래 된 차라서 폐차해야 할 것 같다고 했다.

처음 스카일러가 폐차해야 한다고 들었을 때 그럼 또 차를 알아봐야하고 일이 복잡해진다며 스트레스를 받길래 어차피 폐차되면 보상금도 나오고 차도 바꿀 수 있어서 오히려 좋을 것 같은데?라고 말을 해주니 또 흥이 나서 새 차를 알아보기 시작했다.

We had a tornado in our town and our car got a hail damage. I don't know much about cars so I didn't think the dent was very obvious. Car repair shop told Skylar that there were more than 280 dents on our old car and the insurance might total it. When he first got told that he was already getting stressed that he had to look for a car and things could get complicated. And I said, that could be a good thing so we could have a new car. Skylar changed his mind and got excited about getting a new car then.

그래서 스카이가 나에게 후보 차들을 보여줬는데 15년, 16년도 생산 차들이었다. 그 때 스카일러에게 말은 안했지만 내심 적어도 2017년도에 만들어진 차를 사야겠다고 결심한 뒤였다. 내 마음을 읽기라도 했는지 남편은 폭스바겐 제타 2017년형인데 엄청 좋아보인다며 보여주면서도 자신감없는 태도였다. 난 차 사진을 보자마자 '이게 우리 차가 되겠구나'라는 직감이 왔다. ㅋㅋ 그래서 가격걱정은 하지말고 이 차가 정말 괜찮은 차인지에만 집중해서 알아보라고 했다. 

Skylar started showing me some cars which were made in 2015 or 2016. I didn't tell him but I already made a decision that we should buy a car made in 2017 at least. Somehow he seemed to read my mind and showed me a volkswagen jetta 2017 being not very confident. I guess he thought I would say "NO. WE CAN'T AFFORD IT" lol. But as soon as I saw the pictures of the car, I had a feeling that it's going to be our new car. I told skylar not to think about the price but the quality.

스카일러가 알아본 자동차 사이트는 '카맥스'라는 곳인데, 흥정을 절대 안해도 되는 곳이라 바가지 쓸 걱정도 절대 안해도 되고, 우리가 산 폭스바겐 제타가 조지아주였나 아마 다른 주에 있던 자동차인데 우리가 사는 곳 근처 카맥스로 이전 신청을 공짜로 할 수 있다. 그럼 이동된 차량을 직접 가서 구경하고 마음에 들면 구입하고 마음에 들지 않아도 사지 않아도 되는게 너무 큰 장점으로 다가왔다. 또 차가 이전 신청한 지점으로 도착한지 72시간 내로는 이전 신청자에게만 팔 수 있도록 되어있어서 다른 고객들과 경쟁하지 않고 편안히 둘러볼 수도 있다는 장점도 있다.

The car website is CARMAX. They don't make you haggle so you don't have to worry about getting ripped off. Our Jetta was originally displayed in some other state. Georgia maybe..? Skylar asked them to transport the car to the branch in Huntsville and you can do it for free! So you can look at the car in person, even if you didn't like the car, you don't have to buy it. And within 72 hours the car has arrived to the branch you wanted, it's reserved only for you! 

한국 사람들은 워낙 신형 차를 많이 타서 차에 네비게이션 달린 것 쯤이야 그냥 기본인 급이지만 스카일러에게는 가장 최신형(?) 차를 갖게 된거라 모든 옵션들에 신기해하고 행복해했다. 덩달아 나도 엄청 행복해졌다. 차를 시범운행할 수 있어서 동네 한바퀴를 돌아보고 왔는데 예전 차에 비해 엄청 부드럽고 조용한데다가 모든 옵션이 마음에 들었다. 운전석/조수석 온도를 따로 조정할 수 있는 것, 마일과 킬로미터가 함께 표기되어 있어 나같은 이민자에게도 거리감각을 더 정확히 느낄 수 있다는 것, 열쇠를 가방에만 넣어놔도 차에 가까이 다가가면 차 문 잠긴게 자동으로 풀리는 것 등등등!

Most Koreans have new cars so having a navigation in a car is just normal to Koreans, but to Skylar! It was his newest car and he loved every option the Jetta had :D I was so happy for him too. We could drive the car for a test and Jetta was so quiet, smooth and great in every way compared to our old car! It has different temperature controls for driver's and the passenger (I'm not a car expert so my standard is my old car lol) and it shows distance in two units, miles and km. It's a useful function for immigrants like me. Because I'm used to kilo meters. Also even having a key in my bag I don't have to dig up all the way in to find the key to open the door. Just being close enough from the car, it unlocks the door automatically.

폭스바겐 제타가 가진 네비게이션 말고도 우리 핸드폰을 연결해서 구글맵을 사용할 수 있다는 것도 정말 좋았다. 이날 시부모님과 함께 차를 보러 갔었는데 집에 돌아갈 때 시부모님이 가던 경로에 사고가 있었는지 교통이 꽉 막혔다고 전화가 오셨었더랜다. 근데 우리는 구글맵이 교통 혼잡을 피해 다른 경로로 이미 안내해준 상태라 가장 빠른 경로로 집에 도착할 수 있었다.

Jetta does have it's own navigation but we can use google map by connecting our phone to the car. We went to look at the car with my parent's in law, on the way back home they called us and told that there was a wreck and traffic jam. But our google map already found out the fastest way and guided us to avoid the traffic jam!

또 하나 내가 정말 원했던 것은 선루프였다. 요즘엔 차 지붕에 창문만 있고 안열리는 경우도 있어서 기대도 안하고 있었는데 천장도 열 수 있어서 너무 좋았다. 5월에 파나마시티비치에 가게 됐는데 새 차를 타고 선루프 열고 달릴 생각을 하니 벌써 행복하다. 이 것 말고도 스피커도 여러 군데에 있어서 소리가 우리를 감싸는 것처럼 엄청 입체적으로 들리고 좌석도 엄청 넓다. 미국에는 2도어(트렁크 포함 3도어)가 많은데 드디어 4도어(5도어) 차를 갖게 되니까 이렇게 편할 수가 없다! ㅋㅋ 트렁크도 엄청 엄청 넓어서 둘르스 H마트 가서 장을 많이 봐와도 자리가 많이 남을 것 같다.

I wanted a sun roof. Some cars just have a window on the ceiling that can't be open. So when I saw our Jetta, I didn't expect it to be open all the way! IT DID! We are going to Panama City Beach this May, just imagining we drive there with our new car makes me so happy. The speakers are amazing as well. There are speakers every where in this car and it makes the sound very surrounded. Our back seat is roomy. You can find many 2 door cars in the US. Now we have 4 door car and it feels much more comfortable! The trunk is huge so even when I go to H mart and buy bunch of groceries, I think we would still have much room left in trunk lol.

차를 보러 함께 가주신 시부모님께 우리가 좋아하는 코너스라는 헌츠빌 레스토랑에서 늦은 점심을 대접해드렸다. 차를 보는 데 얼마나 걸릴 지 몰라서 예약을 하지 않고 갔더니 글쎄 40분을 기다려야 한다고 하는 것이다. 그래서 뭐 어쩔 수 없지 라는 마음으로 대기리스트에 이름을 올리고 식당을 나왔는데 종업원이 바로 따라 나와서 하는 말이 "우리 노쇼가 생겨서 지금 당장 들어오실 수 있어요." 라고 하는 것이다. 행운의 날인걸까?

I finally treated my parents in law to lunch at Connor's at the Bridge Street in Huntsville. I didn't make a reservation since we didn't know when we would finish at Carmax. When we got to the restaurant, they said we would have to wait for 40 minutes!!!! +_+

So Skylar and I said "well ok." and walked out of the restaurant. The lady followed us and told us there was a no-show, so we could come in RIGHT NOW +_+!! HOW LUCKY?

코너스 삼겹살은 정말 맛있어서 시부모님이 꼭 드셔보셨으면 좋겠다고 생각했는데 드디어 사드릴 수 있어서 행복했다!

몇조각 안되지만 에피타이저로 사이좋게 나누어 먹고, 자기가 먹고 싶은 메인 메뉴를 주문했다. 

그리고 내가 주문한 건 구운 송어에 찐 브로콜리와 쿠스쿠스가 함께 나오는 메뉴였는데 퀴노아인 줄 알았더니 쿠스쿠스라는 파스타 종류의 음식이라는 거다! 처음 먹어봤는데 뭔가 쫄깃한 쌀알 느낌이었고 너무 맛있어서 코너스에 오면 꼭 이 메뉴만 주문하게 될 것 같다.

Whenever we went to Connor's, we always ordered their grilled pork belly and hoped my parents in law try this dish too. Finally they had the chance! It wasn't many pieces we shared all for appetizer and ordered main dishes. My main dish was grilled rainbow trout with steamed broccoli and couscous. I had no idea what couscous was and we assumed it would be quinoa because it looked very similar! But it was actually a kind of pasta different from quinoa. The taste was pleasantly chewy and it was so good that I would keep ordering this at Connors from now on.

  

Couscous is a small, granular pasta made of semolina flour and it contains gluten. Quinoa is actually a small seed that is cooked and eaten in a similar manner to most grains but is gluten-free and relatively high in protein.

사실은 작년 시부모님 결혼기념일에 코너스 식사권을 사드리고 싶었는데 그렇지 못했었다. 그 이유는 아마 시부모님이 여행을 가셨던 거로 기억한다. 아무튼 드디어 시부모님과 함께 코너스에 오게 되었고 점심을 사드리게 되었는데 시부모님께서 하시는 말씀이 어제인가 오늘이 35년 전 처음 만난 날이라 결혼기념일같은 날이라고 하시는 거다! 그래서 속으로 깜짝 놀랐다. 어쨌든 내 소원 성취한거나 마찬가지니깐 ㅎㅎ 기회가 자주 와서 더 맛있고 비싼 곳에서 대접해드리고 싶은 마음이 있다.

Last year I wanted to buy a gift card of Connor's for my parent's in law's anniversary. But I couldn't. As far as I remember, they went on a trip. So I finally bought them a nice meal and they told us that they first met 35? 37? years ago so it's almost like their another anniversary. I got surprised! It seemed like my wish came true lol. (treating them on their anniversary) I hope treat them to nicer meal at a nicer restaurant more often!

시범주행을 했을 때 헌츠빌 서쪽에 프라비던스라는 새로운 맛집 거리를 지나가게 됐는데 사람들도 정말 많았고 딱 봐도 맛집 포스가 풀풀 풍기는 식당들이 엄청 많았다. 다음 헌츠빌 여행지는 바로 그 곳이 될 것 같다! ㅋㅋ 시부모님과 함께 샘스클럽에도 들려서 우리가 필요한 생필품도 몽땅 쟁여오고 이스터 버니랑 사진도 찍고 헌츠빌 한인마트에 들려 김치도 사왔다. :D

날씨도 정말 정말 좋았던 데다가 여러모로 정말 행복하고 행운이 가득한 날이었다!

When we drove the car for a test, we spotted a new hipster place near Carmax named Village of Providence. There were so many people at every restaurant there, I could tell the place was booming! We might check out the area on our next Huntsville visit. We also went to Sam's Club with my parent's in law and bought some necessities. I was going to buy Sam's Club purple toilet papers, they didn't have them for some reason by then so we had to buy a new kind. I tried today and it was super soft and I loved it!! I will keep buying it lol. The weather was perfect and everything worked out. It was our happy & lucky day.
