스위스 여행 첫째날
미국 알라바마-스위스 입국 여행기
Flying to Zermatt from Huntsville, AL

우리의 스위스로의 여정은 처음부터 쉽지 않았다. 미국 알라바마 헌츠빌에서 워싱턴 DC로 가서 환승하는 비행기표였기 때문에 '국내선'이라 가정하고 느릿느릿 준비해서 보딩타임을 넘긴 시각에 헌츠빌 공항에서 체크인을 시도한 것이었다.
Our travel to Switzerland wasn't easy from the beginning. The first flight was from Huntsville, AL to Washington D.C., we assumed our flight would be considered as a domestic flight. When we tried to check in, it was already after bording time.
다행이도 체크인 데스크에 '수퍼바이저'라는 조끼를 입은 분이 계셨는데 그 분이 "어디로 가십니까? 덴버입니까?" 했는데 내가 "아뇨, 워싱턴 DC입니다." 라고 대답했더니 시간표를 꿰고 있던 수퍼바이저는 바로 "체크인 못합니다. 너무 늦었어요." 라고 말씀하셨다. 그렇게 돌려보낼 수도 있었는데 그 분이 티켓을 확인해보고는 "와. 엄청나게 긴 비행이셨네요. 이건 국제선이니 최소 2시간은 전에 공항에 오셔야합니다." 라고 하셨다.
There was a person wearing a vest that says "Supervisior"at the check-in desk. She asked us "Where are you going? to Denver?" I answered "No, to Washington D.C.". She answered right away "It's too late to check-in." like she remembered every time schedule. She might have assumed our final destination would be to Washington D.C., so she scanned our tickets to change the time to another and realized "Wow, you guys have such long flights...." I guess she couldn't give up on us like that. She instantly called someone and asked them to find a different route to Zurich, Switzerland. Also she wanred us saying "This is an international flight. You need to be at the airport 2 hours earlier than the departure time."
이상하리만치 마음이 평안했는데 그 분이 "제가 다른 비행기편 알아보겠습니다." 라더니 어떤 담당자와 전화로 취리히 공항 편좀 알아달라하셨다. 그렇게 그 다른 담당자를 믿고 기다리는 순간에도 그 수퍼바이저는 동시에 4가지 일을 처리하는 프로페셔널한 면모까지 보여줘 존경심까지 들었다. 그렇게 10분 기다리자 다른 비행편을 찾았다며 오늘은 출발이 어렵고 내일 다시 공항에 최소 1시간 15분 전에라도 오라는 당부의 말까지 들었다. 그래서 우리가 얻게 된 비행 경로는 헌츠빌 → 휴스턴, 텍사스 → 뮌헨 → 취리히 공항이었다. 우리가 그동안 비행 좀 해봤다고 느슨해졌던 것 같다. 다행이도 대체 경로가 경유시간도 길지 않고 정말 괜찮은 경로였다. 그렇게 우리의 일을 처리해준 그분께서는 한국말로 "감사합니다." 라고 하시며 우리를 돌려보냈다. (미국에서는 이렇게 일처리 빠르고 멀티 가능한 사람을 보기 어렵기 때문에 정말 운이 좋았다고 할 수 밖에 없었다. 거기다 한국말 센스까지...)
Even though it was so obvious there was a high change our travel could have been ruined. I was being so calm thinking it could be handled. (While Skylar was freaking out.) While the person on the phone was looking for a different route, the supervisor handled 4 different work at the same time. She was so professional that I couldn't help admiring her lol. After 10 minutes of waiting, they found another flight! She told me we can't leave today but tomorrow morning and make sure to be here at latest 1 hour and 15 minutes before. The route they found was from Huntsville, AL to Huston, TX / Huston to Munich, Germany / and Munich to Zurich, Switzerland. It almost seemed like this alternative flight seemed better that the original route. The supervisor handled this complicated issue and let us go saying "감사합니다." (Thank you in Korean) How sweet! We were so lucky to have her at the time.
휴스턴에서 뮌헨으로 10시간 비행 후, 뮌헨에서 입국심사를 받았다. 내 생에 처음 밟는 유럽 땅인데 입국심사원이 이렇게 친절할 수가. 그동안 어마무시한 미국 입국심사만 받아오다가 독일에서 이렇게 친절하고 쉬운 입국심사를 받으니 벌써부터 사랑에 빠질 수 밖에 없었다. 처음으로 입국 심사관과 '대화'라는 걸 해보는 기분이랄까. 엄연히 독일과 스위스는 다른 나라임에도 입국심사를 다른 나라에서 받는 다는게 조금은 의아했지만 편리한 것은 분명했다. 오랜만의 장시간 비행이어서 그런지 몸 상태가 그렇게 좋지는 않았다. 그러면서도 빨리 취리히행 비행기에 올라타고 싶은 마음이었다.
After 10 hours for flying to Munich, we went through immigration in Germany. That was my first time to be in Europe! The immigration officer was super nice. That was my first impression to Europe! Germany to be exact. I had experienced American immigation officers and they treat you like a criminal (Seriously they do.) It was for the first time in a long time to feel I was communicating with an immigration officer!! It was quite strange to go through immigration in a different country from a final destination's. But it was very convinient and easy for sure. We didn't feel very well after the long flight but we wanted to get in the final flight to Switzerland ASAP.
우리의 마지막 비행 항공사는 루프트 한자. 기내가 굉장히 청결했다. 비행기에 탑승하자 마자 받은 것은 다름아닌 '초콜렛'.
The airline of our last flight was Lufthansa. The plane was very clean and new. As we boarded, we got a KitKat.
마지막 비행은 1시간으로 짧기도 했는데 기내에서의 창밖 풍경도 예사롭지 않았다. 알프스 산맥이 구름과 맞닿아 솟아오른 모습은 정말 장관이었다.
Our last flight was only an hour long. But the view from the plane was tremendous! We saw the Alps above the clouds.
드.디.어. 우여곡절도 많았고 시간도 오래 걸렸지만 스위스 취리히 공항에 도착했다. 아 드디어 비행이 끝났다는 생각에 안도감이 절로 들었다.
Finally we landed in Zurich airport. It took us a long time to get here and we were so relieved that the flying was finally over.
취리히 공항에 도착 후 짐을 찾은 후 서비스센터로 가서 포켓 와이파이를 대여했다. 스위스에서는 항상 초콜렛을 같이 주는가 보다.
We found our luggage and headed to Zurich Service Center in the airport to rent a pocket Wi-fi. By the way, It seems like you get chocolate from everywhere in Switzerland lol.
본격적으로 기차여행이 시작되었다. 취리히 공항에서 만난 첫 기차는 이층짜리 기차였다. 내일로 짬밥으로 기차여행은 식은 죽 먹기였던 나는 혼란스러워하는 스카일러를 데리고 무사히 기차에 탑승했다.
Our first Swiss train was a two story train! I have traveled by train many times back in Korea, so it was pretty easy to figure out how to use the train. I led Skylar who was so confused to our first Swiss train.
취리히 공항역에서 바로 체르마트까지 가는 여정이었다. 원래는 첫날 취리히에서 머물 생각이었는데 하루가 날라가는 바람에 바로 두번째 여정으로 빡세게 가야했기 때문...
We headed to Zermatt from Zurich airport. We were supposed to spend one night in Zurich after a long flight. But our trip got changed so we had to skip the first day of our itenerary and moved onto the second day plan.
엄청나게 피곤하고 두통이 밀려왔지만 그럼에도 창밖을 계속 볼 수 밖에 없었던 건 미국, 한국과는 사뭇 다른 풍경때문이었다. 높은 산들과 푸르른 들판이 끝없이 펼쳐지는 5월의 스위스는 정말이지 아름다움 그 자체였다.
We were extremely tired and had such a bad headache but we couldn't stop looking out the window. The scenery was different from Alabama and even Korea. Huge mountains and green fields spread out. Switzerland in May was beauty itself.
장정 세시간이나 되는 기차여행을 끝으로 체르마트에 도착했다.
We finally arrived at Zermatt.
