한국 및 세계 기준과 달리, 미국은 9월 첫번째 월요일이 근로자의 날이다. 작년엔 근로자의 날을 껴서 5박 6일로 뉴욕에 다녀왔었고, 이번엔 주말과 월요일 하루를 더한 2박 3일 일정으로 시카고에 다녀왔다.

International Labor Day is May 1st including Korea's but Labor day in America is the first Monday in September. We couldn't miss this chance. We went to New York City for 6 days with Labor day last year and this year we headed to Chicago!

헌츠빌에서 시카고까지
From Huntsville, AL to Chicago, IL

미국 국내여행을 할 때 버밍햄 공항보다는 헌츠빌 공항을 더 선호한다. 헌츠빌 공항이 비교적 더 새 건물에 사람도 적어서 수속이 진짜 쉽다. 그리고 국제선 탈 때 시카고 경유를 많이 해봐서 아는데, 확실히 남부 공항 직원들이 친절하다. 상대적으로 적은 사람들을 상대해서 그런지 반갑게 인사받는 것만으로도 황송한 기분이 든다. 국내선인지라 여권 말고 미국 운전면허증으로 신분증을 대체할 수 있다.

We prefer Huntsville airport to Birmingham airport because there are much fewer people in Huntsville airport with newer buildings. I have experienced Chicago international airport and the people, southern airport people are way sweeter.(They do greetings!) Probably because they deal with not many people. At Huntsville airport, I showed my driver's license instead of passport since it was a domestic flight.

이번 항공사는 아메리칸 에어라인이었다. 시카고는 헌츠빌 공항에서 불과 2시간 반 이내 직항 항공편이 있기 때문에 매우 편리했다. 항공권 구입은 마일리지 찬스를 썼다(!)

Our airlines was American Airlines. There is a 2 and a half hour direct flight to Chicago from Huntsville. It was very convenient. We bought the flight tickets with miles.

헌츠빌 공항에서도 안내방송으로 "시카고 행 비행기는 우리 공항에서 가장 작은 항공기로 운행됩니다."라고 했을 정도로 초소형 비행기였다. 그래도 날씨가 좋아서 순조로운 비행이었고 우리가 앉은 방향 쪽으로 시카고 건물들이 내려다 보였다. 이 때가 정말 여행에서 가장 설레는 순간일지도 모른다. 마음만큼은 이미 시카고 다운타운에 도착해 있었으니...

They even announced that our plane was the smallest of the ones at Huntsville airport. The weather was perfect and so was the flying. We could look down to Chicago skylines. We were looking forward to our Chicago trip.

지인이 여행와서 벽화 앞에서 사진 안찍으면 여행 온 것 아니라는 명언을 남겼기에, 시카고 공항에서 마주친 이 벽화를 보고 사진 찍지 않을 수 없었다. 공항에서 기차를 타면 40분 내로 시카고 다운타운에 도착한다. 블루라인이라는 것만 기억하면 전혀 어려울 것이 없다. 개찰구 앞에 있는 티켓 발매소에서 1회용 승차권을 구입하고 티켓을 찍고 들어가면 된다.

Someone we know says you didn't visit a city if you didn't take a picture by a mural, so here Skylar goes!! We saw this mural in Chicago airport. It takes 40 minutes to downtown by train. We bought 1 time tickets for 5 dollars.

블루라인은 상당히 많은 역에서 정차한다. 급행열차를 하나 만들면 좋을텐데... 그래도 여행이니 바깥풍경 보면서 40분을 보냈다. 시카고 다운타운 내에는 룹이라고 서울 2호선처럼 순환경로가 있는데 거기 환승부분이 조금 헷갈린 나머지, 우리가 계획한 것과는 달리 엉뚱한 곳에서 내렸다.

There are a few train lines, the one to downtown is Blue line. It stops at many train stations. I wished they had an express line as well. But riding a train for 40 mins can be a fun part! We got confused about where to get off in downtown at the end, we decided to walk to the hotel.

의도한 건 아니지만, 지하철에서 나오자마자 유명한 시카고 극장이 있었다. 여행객 느낌 물씬 풍기면서 사진도 찍고, 호텔까지 천천히 걸어가기로 했다.

We didn't plan to see the Chicago theater, luckily when we got out of the train station, this building was the first thing we saw. We took a few photos and headed to the hotel.

호텔 가는 길에 만난 시카고 강. 이곳이 중심지라서 여행 내내 자주 왔다갔다했다. 날씨 좋고, 여객선에는 관광객이 한가득인 모습을 보니, 시카고에 대한 안좋았던 기억들이 희미해지기 시작했다. ㅋㅋ

Also Chicago river was on our way to the hotel. This area is the main part of downtown Chicago, we passed by here many times during our trip. There were many travelers in boats and it made us more excited!

시아버지가 어렸을 때 시카고에서 사셨다던데, 그래서인지 시카고는 정말 위험한 도시라며 조심 또 조심하라 하셨기에, 호텔을 고를 때에도 다운타운 중심지에 있는 곳으로 고심하여 골랐다. (막상 가보니 다운타운은 정말 안전했다. 그래도 시카고는 미국에서 제일 위험한 도시라는 평이 자자하기에 조심하는 것이 절대 나쁠 게 아니다.) 메리아트 계열 중 오토그래피 콜렉션 부티크 호텔 라인은 전 세계에서 딱 하나 뿐인 호텔로, 호텔 EMC2는 오직 시카고에서만 만날 수 있다는 것이다. 위치도 좋고, 내부 사진에 홀딱 반한데다가 로봇까지 있는 최첨단 호텔이다. 

Skylar's father used to live in Chicago when he was little. He warned us a lot about how dangerous Chicago is. I put a lot of time to choose a good/safe hotel in very safe area. This hotel is a Marriott hotel, and this hotel is one and only kind in the world. Meaning, to experience Hotel EMC2, you need to come to Chicago. It's located in downtown Chicago, I loved the interior and they even have two robots in the hotel!

샤워실 벽이 투명하지만 주변에 아주 두꺼운 재질의 암막 커튼을 두를 수 있어서 혹시 가족끼리 와도 민망함을 줄일 방도는 있다. 나는 개인적으로 변기가 따로 분리된 공간에 있는 걸 좋아한다. 이 호텔도 그랬다. 어메니티는 그리스 화장품은 Korres 꺼였는데 냄새가 정말 좋아서 나중에 꼭 대용량으로 사보려고 한다.

The shower room wall is transparent, but you can put thick curtains around it. I like a toilet to be in a separate room.(It makes me think it will help the rest part of a bathroom keep clean.) I liked the layout of this hotel room. Their amenities were Korres -Greek cosmetic brand- it smelled so good that I want to buy a larger bottle of bath products at some point.

이 왼쪽에 트럼펫같은 거에 핸드폰 거치대가 있어서 음악을 재생하면 더 생생하게 음질을 감상할 수 있다.

There is a phone holder on top of the trumpet. When you play a song with your phone sitting in there, it makes the sound better.

우리 방은 퀸 사이즈 방이었고, 뷰는 볼 게 없었지만 복도 끝 방이어서 좋았다. 방음도 좋은 건지 특별하게 불편함을 겪지 않았다. 로봇은 사용해보지 못했는데, 어메니티를 추가로 요청하면 호텔 카운터에서 로봇 머리뚜껑(?)열고 그곳에 어메니티를 넣는가보더라. 그럼 로봇이 알아서 엘리베이터 타고 호텔 방으로 찾아온다.ㅋㅋ (이 곳 엘리베이터도 운행방식이 독특함.) 혹시 호텔 EMC2에 가면 꼭 한번 경험해보시길 바라는 마음에~! 시카고 다운타운 호텔 EMC2 정말 추천한다.

Our room was a queen guest room. There wasn't a view, but I liked that it was at the end of the hall. (Not between two other rooms.) We didn't have any issues with noises. We didn't get to try the robot while staying, if you ask for more amenities, a worker at the counter opens robot's head and puts in amenities there, robot goes in the elevator and come to your room! I really enjoyed our stay at Hotel EMC2.
