이른 아침 일어나 앨라배마 주 헌츠빌 공항에서 출발,
텍사스 달라스 공항에서 경유를 해서
애리조나 주의 플래그스태프 공항 Flagstaff으로 착륙하는 일정이었다.
We flew from Huntsville Airport early in the morning,
transfered at Dallas Airport in Texas,
and arrived at Flagstaff Airport in Arizona.
플래그스태프로 착륙하는데 아무래도 캐년 지역이라 그런지
돌풍이나 풍속이 다른 곳과는 예사 다른 느낌이었다.
심하진 않았지만 약간 짜릿한 정도의 비행이랄까 ^^
벌써부터 자연경관이 달라보여서 두근두근했다.
While we were landing,
the plane was a bit shaky because of stronger winds over the canyon.
But I was getting excited looking down at the different landscapes.
플래그스태프 공항은 우리의 최종 목적지인 그랜드캐년까지
차로 한시간 반밖에 안걸린다.
엄청나게 작은 규모의 공항이라 귀여웠다.
작은 롯지/캐빈만하달까?
이 공항에서 Avis 렌트카를 빌렸는데, 아무래도 왕복이 아니라
One-way 출발지와 최종 렌트카 반환지가 다르다보니 가격이 꽤나 비쌌다 ㅠ
다들 이 공항에서 원웨이로 빌리는지,
카운터에 공지로 더이상의 one way 가능 차량 수량이 없다고 붙어 있었다.
It takes only one and a half hours to Grand Canyon from Flagstaff airport by car.
The airport was as small as a lodge.
The rental cost was quite expensive since we drop off the car at a different location.
There must have been many people who had the same thought,
The rental place announced there would be no more available cars for one-way car rental.
우리가 빌린 차량은 중형 SUV였다.
현대 산타페로 기억한다.
네명이서 타기에 아주 적당한 크기였고,
최상의 외관 컨디션은 아니었으나
우리의 로드트립을 성공적으로 만들어준 일등 공신이었다.
We got a intermediate sized SUV car which was Hyundai Santa-Fe.
It was a perfect size for four people.
The exterior didn't look the best of it but it worked perfectly during the road trip.
두근 두근,
플래그스태프를 떠나
그랜드캐년 가는 길에 있는
Williams, AZ 윌리엄스라는 마을에 들르기로 한다.
I started having butterflies in my stomach as the trip began.
We decided to stop by the small town, Williams, AZ on the way to Grand Canyon.
그 유명한 루트66 도로변에 위치한 윌리엄즈는
동네 전체가 루트66 테마로 꾸며져있는 나름의 관광도시다.
Williams is known for a touristic town with Route 66 theme.
루트66 사인을 찾아 헤매었지만
우리가 찾은 건 동네 주유소의 벽화 뿐 ^^
시부모님이 약간 실망하신 것 같았지만
이왕 온김에 사진이라도 찍고 가본다.
We searched for a Route 66 sign, this was all we've got.
Yes. A sign next to a gas station lol.
I could tell my in-laws were a bit disappointed by the scale and location.
But we did take some pictures in front of the mural.
워낙 관광객이 많이 오는 동네인지
기념품 잡화점에 없는 게 없는 것이 없다.
나와 스카일러 이름은 약간 레어한데도
우리 이름 자석도 쉽사리 발견할 수 있었다.
꼭 기념품점은 들러보시길!
Their local gift shops were amazing.
They had every kind of goods they could have.
I hadn't seen magnets with my name or Skylar's name anywhere else but here.
I highly recommend stopping by a gift shop in Williams.
윌리엄즈에 있는 Safeway 식료품점에 들려서 생수를 포함한 과자 등 여행 필수품을 구비했다.
이게 정말 괜찮은 플랜이었던게,
그랜드캐년 빌리지에 들어가면 정말 먹을만한 것이 없다.
물론 그 안에도 식료품점은 있지만
착륙 후 허기를 달래러 식료품점 델리 코너를 이용할 수 있었다는~
We also went to a grocery store named Safeway in the town
to grab waters, snacks and things to eat for lunch.
It worked out great. There was not much to eat in Grand Canyon Village.
우리는 그랜드캐년 빌리지 안에 있는
브라이트앤젤 롯지 Bright Angel Lodge 에서 2박을 묵었다.
가장 좋은 점이라면
아무래도 호텔 여관 뒤가 바로 그랜드캐년이라는 것! (10초컷)
We stayed at Bright Angel Lodge in Grand Canyon Village for two nights.
The location was awesome.
It takes 10 secs to have this view from the lodge.
브라이트앤젤 랏지와 그랜드캐년 사이에 있는
소화전은 바로 우리 시아버지가 손수 만드신 것이었다.
20년 전 만든 소화전을 알아볼 수 있었던 건
바로 꼭대기에 세잎클로버 스탬프 덕분.
개개인의 지문과도 같은 이 도장 덕분에 너무나도 신기한 조우를 하게 되었다.
My father in law makes fire hydrants.
Funny thing is,
there was a fire hydrant between the lodge and the canyon
with my father-in-law's stamp on it.
That proves he made this one himself and has been sitting there
waiting for him for 20 years.
If we didn't come here, we would never find out this one was at Grand Caynon!
브라이트앤젤 롯지 후기
Bright Angel Lodge (2박)
접근성이 엄청나게 좋아
1성급의 엄청나게 오래된 롯지인데도 선택했지만,
그 오랜 세월 찌든 냄새가 어마무시했다.
화장실에도 환풍구가 없고,
방 위에 보통 천장 팬(선풍기)가 달려있는데 그것도 없어
환기가 전.혀. 되지 않아 냄새가 묵었다.
그래서 첫째날, 둘째날 이곳에 머무는 동안 냄새가 캐리어 안에 있는
옷에 다 스며들었다. 와우...................
거기다가 방이 굉장히 좁았고, 화장실 샤워칸은 협소해서 거의 고시원을
방불케했다. ㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠ
입구에 조용히 해달라는 팻말이 있어
사람들이 다들 조용히 한건지, 방음이 좋아서 그런건지는(아닐듯) 모르겠지만,
다시 가라고 하면 웃돈 주고 다른 숙박시설을 고려해볼 것이다.
The location was the reason why I chose this lodge.
Even though I was aware this lodge was the oldest.
But I did not know they didn't have fans or whatsoever to circulate air and moisture,
the smell was very strong and almost made me gag.

까먹을 뻔 했는데,
자는 내내 라디에이터 히터가 돌아가는데 이게 희안하게 딸깍 딸깍 하는 소리를 낸다
그래서 잠이 들려하면 딸깍 거려서 굉장히 거슬렸다.
이쯤되면 비추후기 ㅎ
Also another thing to consider is
the radiator in the room makes noises all night.
It sounds like clicking every time it turns on and off.
해가 기울자
급속도로 추워졌다.
목도리와 장갑, 비니와 히트텍 등등
보온을 철저히 하고 나왔다.
As the sun went down, the temperature dropped down.
We bundled up with a scarf, gloves, hat, and thermal clothing.
호텔 뒷면을 천천히 걸어보기로 한다.
점점 쌀쌀해지는 날씨에 빨리 들어가고 싶었지만
또 오래된 묵은냄새의 방에는 들어가고 싶지 않았고^^;
We checked out the backside of the lodge, and along the canyon.
It was really cold but also the musty odor in the room kept me out of the room.
그냥 천천히 걷는데
해가 어찌나 빨리 지는지
금세 별을 볼 수 있게 되었다.
How fast the sun set, we could see the stars in no time!
그랜드캐년의 밤은 고요 그 자체였다.
캐년이 있는 곳은 어둠 그 자체여서 밤하늘의 별들에
온전히 집중할 수 있었다.
사진에 담기지 않았지만, 엄청난 수의 별들과 은하수를 맨 눈으로
관찰할 수 있었고
신비롭게도 별똥별들이 떨어져 소원을 빌기도 했다.
The night in Canyon was complete silence.
It was peach black in the canyon and helped us focus on the stars in the sky.
The photos could not include how many of the stars we actually saw on the night,
we saw milky ways with hundreds, thousands of stars and shooting stars even.
다음 날 새벽 6시 반, 그랜드캐년 푸드코트에 왔다.
그랜드캐년 빌리지 안에는
식당들이 꽤 되지만 비싼데 가격값 못하는 곳들이 대부분이다.
그래서 우리가 간 곳은 Maswik Food Court.
이곳의 평점도 그저 그랬으나, 그나마 가격대와 맞는 음식을 먹을 수 있는 곳.
나는 꽤나 만족했다. 특히 저 소세지 링크가 존맛
The next morning, we came to this food court in the village at 6:30 AM.
There are a few numbers of restaurants in that area,
but they are very overpriced.
The one we chose was Maswik Food court with not very many selections.
The ratings were okay, but I was happy with the food and price.
아침을 이렇게나 일찍 먹고 우리가 향한 곳은
바로 Mather Point 의 일출을 보러였는데
가는 길에 발견한 뮬 디어.
귀가 길고 몸통이 어두운 갈색의 독특한 사슴이었다.
사람들을 많이 봐서 거리낌도 없는 국립공원의 사슴이라니 :)
After breakfast, we headed to Mather point.
We ran into mule deer with big ears.
They were not afraid of humans.
추운 손 달래가며
마더포인트에 입성
구름이 많이 껴 일출 보기 최상의 날씨는 아니었지만
그리 많지 않은 사람들 사이를 지나, 가족사진을 찍었다.
We finally found Mather Point.
It was not the best weather for the sunrise.
We did take some family pictures at the viewpoint.
마더포인트에서 사진을 찍고
근처에 비지터센터로 향했다.
After we enjoyed enough of the sunrise, we went to the visitor center.
이때 아침식사를 하러 나온 엘크 무리와 마주쳤다.
실제로 엘크를 본 건 이번이 처음!!
뮬 사슴에 이어 엘크까지 너무나 신기한 동물들이다.
비지터 센터 입구에는 각종 FAQ가 있었는데, 그 중 유용했던 질답은
"1-2시간 밖에 없는데 그랜드캐년을 보는 가장 좋은 방법이 뭔가요?"
라는 질문에 대한 답이었다.
그것은 바로 Trailview Overlook 경로를 운전해서 각 뷰 포인트마다 정차해서
다른 각도의 그랜드캐년을 보는 것이었다.
이렇게 우리의 하루 일정이 정해졌다!
Guess what we saw at the visitor center?
There were elk.
It was amazing to see mule deer and elk which I don't see in person often!
There were many FAQs at the entrance of the visitor center.
We got an answer for the best way to look around the canyon within 1-2 hrs by car.
Starting from Bright angel lodge, there is a road called Trailview Overlook that takes you each viewpoint.

Hermit Rest를 최종 목적지로 하는 경로인데
지금 생각해보니 아주 잘한 결정이었다는!
도로 정비가 워낙 잘 되어있고,
각종 뷰 포인트에서 사진을 다 찍고 절경을 즐겨도
2시간이면 모든게 다 가능하다:)
It was a great decision.
We got to see every angle of Grand Canyon with a short amount of time.
아무리 봐도 봐도 엄청난 크기의 그랜드캐년!!
책에서만 보던 그 곳에 직접 와보다니 너무나도 신기했다.
미국인인 시아빠도 자신이 직접 왔다는 사실이 신기해 감탄을 하셨다.
The scale of Grand Canyon is speechless.
I just couldn't believe I was at Grand Canyon where I used to see only in books.
Even my father-in-law was amazed by the fact that he was there too.

And we got to the final end which is Hermits Rest.
시간이 아직 남자
이번에는 반대 방향에 위치한 뷰 포인트인
Dessert View 드라이브로 향했다.
We still had enough time until the sunset.
We headed to the completely opposite direction view point, Dessert view.
이곳은 아까보다 눈이 좀 더 많고
빙판길이 군데 군데 있었다.
There was so much more snow this way and there was some ice on the road.
반대 방향에서 보는 그랜드캐년은 또 다르다.
It was different to see the canyon from this direction.
안내 표지판의 설명을 보면서 경치를 즐기는 것도 묘미.
협곡 사이 사이, 콜로라도 강을 찾아보는 것도 또 하나의 재미였다.
It was fun to find the Colorado river swirling in the valley of the canyon.
이 dessert view 최종 목적지에는
Dessert View Watch Tower이 있다.
지금은 안에는 못들어가고 1층의 기념품 샵만 입장 가능하다.
At the end of this scenic drive, there was a watch tower.
We weren't allowed in the tower itself but we could go to the gift shop on the first floor.
뒤로 굽이굽이 이어지는
콜로라도 강을 배경으로
한 장 남겨본 뒤,
일몰을 보러 마더포인트로 다시 향했다.
I got a picture with a background of the Colorado river.
We headed back to Mather Point for Sunset.
석양이 지는 마더포인트는
정말이지 아름다웠다.
It was beautiful when the sun was going down at Mather Point.
함께해서 더 좋았던
결혼기념일 여행 <3
It was more fun to have company during the trip.
어째 시간이 지날수록
더 아름다워지는건지
발걸음을 떼기가 어려워진다.
The longer we stayed there, the prettier it got.
It was hard for us to leave Mather point with the beautiful sunset.
마지막으로 한 번 더 카메라 앵글에 담아보고,
저녁을 먹으러 갔다.
We took a few more pictures and went for dinner.
다음 날 아침
일출, 야바파이포인트
the next morning,
sunrise at Yavapai Point.
해가 거의 뜨기 직전
호호 손 불어가며
도착한 야바파이 포인트.
전날 마더포인트를 두번이나 갔기에
다음 날 아침에는 야바파이포인트를 보러 왔다.
Right before the sun rose,
we managed to get to Yavapai Point.
Since we already went to Mather point twice the day before,
we wanted to check out Yavapai point this time.
마더포인트 전망대보다는
다소 작은 크기였지만,
그 곳에서 보는 뷰는 절대 작지 않았다.
그래서인지 전문 포토그래퍼들이 꽤나 많았다는.
The size of the viewpoint at Yavapai might be smaller than Mather Points',
the view from there was not smaller than Mather Points'.
There were more pro-photographers at this viewpoint as well.

일출을 충분히 즐긴 뒤,
서둘러 짐을 싸고 체크아웃을 한다.
왜냐면 페이지에 있는 앤텔롭캐년 투어에
때 맞춰 가야하기 때문!
We enjoyed the sunrise here and hurried to check out.
Because we had an appointment with a Navajo tour guide at Antelope Canyon later that day.
Page, AZ 페이지에 가려면
우리가 이미 투어로 다녀온 데저트뷰 도로를 다시 타야 해서
한번 더 그랜드캐년을 눈에 담고 올 수 있었다.
We drove through the Dessert view drive once again to get to Page, AZ.
We could enjoy Grand Canyon one more time.
안녕 그랜드캐년!
Bye bye Grand Canyon!
이제 광활한 사막이 펼쳐지는 도로를 지나
페이지로 향한다 ❤😛
Now we are driving through a dessert and heading to Page, AZ.
