Homestead Hollow Festival

시부모님께서 이번주 금요일 휴가를 내시고 가을 축제에 가신다며 나도 초대해주셨다.

금요일 아침 9시에 만나서 1시간 정도 운전해서 도착한 앨라배마 주 스프링빌.

My parents in law suggested we check out Homestead Hollow Festival in Springville, Alabama.

Because it's time for fall festivals!

We met at 9 am and drove about for an hour to get there.

금요일 오전이라 사람들이 적을 거라고 생각했던 건 오산이었다.

주차장이 거의 빽빽하게 차로 채워져있었고 규모도 생각보다 무지 컸다.

I didn't expect many people to be there since it was on a weekday!

But the parking lot was almost packed and the place was huge.

입장료가 있는 축제일 지 몰랐다. 알았으면 입장료를 챙겨가는 거였는데 ㅜㅠ

감사하게도 시부모님께서 내주셨다.

한편으로는 입장료를 내고 들어가는 곳이라면 관리가 잘 되는 진짜 축제라는 생각이 들었다.

None of us knew that we had to buy tickets T_T.

Thankfully they paid for me too.

It was 8 dollars each so it was not cheap.

Meanwhile I thought this festival must be something since we actually pay to see.

역시 가을하면 할로윈~ 호박으로 중간 중간 데코레이션 되어있었다.

Halloween season is coming :)

여기 들어가면 옥수수 갈리는 기계를 구경할 수도 있고 친절하게 설명도 해주신다.

물레방아를 이용해서 만든 수력에너지로 돌아가는 기계였다.

This is a gristmill and you can see the machine.

They explained how it works and it runs automatically with water power that the waterwheel makes.

학교 소풍으로 나들이 나온 아이들도 무지 많았다.

그래서 축제가 더 활기차게 보였는지도.

There were so many kids there and they made the fair more lively.

아래 사진 오른쪽에 루트 셀러라고 주변 땅보다 깊숙히 파서

낮은 온도를 유지하게 해주는 일종의 냉장고 역할의 창고였다.

그 안에 피클, 채소 등을 보관하는 거라고 한다.

The small house is a root cellar. 

You dig the ground and build it almost like semi-basement.

Then it keeps food cool down, you put pickles and vegetables in the cellar.

날씨가 엄청 더웠는데 어찌나 벤더가 많았는지 여기 저기 둘러보기 바빴다. @_@

It was super hot ;

There were so many vendors !! we were busy to check out every booth.

여긴 우리가 방문한 첫번째 캐빈이었는데 옛날 물건들을 볼 수 있었다.

1층에는 옛날 옛적 사용하던 오르간, 요강, 집 구조를 볼 수 있었고 

2층에는 작은 다락방에 아기들이 놀았던 장면을 재현해두었다.

This is the first cabin we visited.

They displayed very old stuff such as bedpans +_+, an organ on the first floor.

When we went upstairs, there was a toy bed, toys. in short, an attic for kids.

버터 만드는 통이라고 한다. 

저 막대기를 오래 휘젓는다고 함.

It's a butter churn and you stir the stick for long to make butter.

뒷마당에 있는 닭인데 무슨 칠면조인줄;

진짜 엄청 대왕큰 닭... 무서움

In their back yard, there were chickens.

Look how big they are. It almost big enough like a turkey.

시엄마가 좋아하는 퀼트 담요들인데 하나에 최소 20만원이 넘는다. 

한땀한땀 천을 이어부치는 거라 하나의 예술 작품이라 봐도 무방하다.

My mother in law loves quilts.

They cost over 200 dollars each.

You stitch each cloth together, that must be a lot of work.

시아빠가 여기 빵집에서 레드벨벳 케이크 사주셨다.

실제로 먹어보니 진짜 맛있었다. bb

My father in law bought me a red velvet cake here.

It was very tasty. 

땡볕에 캐리커처 구경하기.

빠른 속도로 슥슥 그리시는데 진짜 대단해보였다.

Watching the artist drawing a caricature.

He drew very fast and it looked cool.

여기는 예전에 침례를 받던 개울이라고 한다.

물이 엄청 맑았는데 탁해보이는 이유는 애기들이 첨벙첨벙 거리고 놀고 있어서 ㅎㅎ

This place was used for baptism.

The water was crystal clear.

But the reason why it looks cloudy in these pictures is some kids were splashing in it.

시엄마가 사주신 점심!

무려 5달러나 내고 사먹은 터닙 그린(순무 잎?) 내가 완전 좋아하는 음식

음식 받았을 때 국물이 흐를 거라고 생각 못해서 조금 기울였다가 뜨거운 물이 내 손 위로 흘러서 아팠다 ㅠ

그리고 발견할 때마다 먹어주는 퍼널케익. 언제든 맛있다.

Cintha bought me these foods.

She paid 5 dollars for the turnip greens which are my favorite.

I didn't expect the very hot juice to leak out of the container. It hurt T_T

And a yummy funnel cake!!!

애기들이 동물 만지고 노는 곳.

염소랑 토끼들 있었는데 불쌍했다 'ㅅ';

Kids were playing with goats and bunnies.

Pitiful animals .. :(

시엄마 시아빠 사진도 찍어드리고

I took these pictures of my parents in law !

나랑 시엄마도 함께 사진 찍었다.

And my father in law took this picture of cintha and me.

시아빠가 설명해주셨는데 무슨 용도인지 까먹었다.

아마 음식 창고였던 것 같은데, 돌을 아래 깔아서 적정한 온도가 유지되도록 한다고 들은 듯.

My father in law, Terry explained what it was and I can't remember -_-a

I guess it was like..a food storage.

You put stones under the building and it stays cool.

고기들을 천장에 걸고 아래는 통나무들 쌓고 훈제 고기를 만드는 스모크방.

Hang meats from the ceiling and smoke them.

마차도 전시되어 있었는데 위에는 남자 의사가 사용했던 마차같고,

아래는 여성 분 마차인 듯.

There were wagons.

First one must be doctor's and next one is for a lady.

이 건물도 창고인데, 옥수수 저장 창고다.

건물의 연식이 오래됐다는 걸 지붕만 봐도 그 세월이 느껴짐.

This one is a storage for corn.

You can tell that this building is old by the roof.

미국 남부에서 감 보기가 힘든데 여기서 처음으로 봤다.

미니 방울토마토만한 크기의 감... 신기해.

It was my first time to see american persimmons.

The size was very small compared to Korean persimmons.

플로리다에서 홍수로 인해 이 곳 스프링빌에 정착한 가족의 캐빈.

엄청 큰 집이 아니었는데 16명의 아이들과 함께 살았다고 하니 얼마나 좁았을 지;

작은 앨범이 있어서 가족들의 역사를 볼 수 있었는데 그 당시 양복을 갖춰입고,

어떤 남자는 대학을 나온 걸로 봐서 꽤나 부유했던 집안인 것 같았다.

Because of a Flood in Florida, this family moved all the way to Springville.

This cabin was not very big but there were 16 kids who lived here back in 1920.

We saw their photo album and they were wearing suits so I guess they were rich.

And one of the boys graduated a university as well.

시아빠가 어렸을 때 뒷마당에 우물이 있어서 목욕을 할 때면 한바가지씩 물 떠서 하셨다고 한다.

그게 어언 40년 전 얘기라고 하니 그 사이에 미국도 많이 변한 듯 싶다.

Terry had a well in the back yard at his old house.

When he wanted to take a bath, he drew water from the well and poured out into his bathtub.

It was about 40 years ago.

구경을 마치고 돌아가는 길.

공예품 축제여서 하나 하나 자세히 가까이에서 찍을 순 없었지만,

볼거리가 정말 다양했다!

On the way back.

I didn't take pictures of their arts and crafts.

But there sure were many things to see.

누가 다육이를 개울에 버렸는지 저기서 살고 있네.

I wonder who dumped succulents in the stream.

시엄마는 알라바마 티셔츠를 하나 구입하셨다.

My mother in law bought an alabama T shirt.

시부모님 덕분에 진짜 미국 지역 축제를 구경할 수 있었다.

Thanks to my parents in law, I got to see a real american festival.
