미국 알라바마 주 뒷마당 상추 씨앗 발아에서 수확하기

3월 초였던가 아직 상추 씨앗 뿌리기엔 이른 감이 있을 때 '에라 모르겠다. 뿌려놓으면 알아서 자라겠지.' 했던 상추들이 자라났다. 역시 상추는 제일 키우기 쉽고 유용한 작물임에 분명하다. 깻잎은 헌츠빌 한인마트가서 모종 두개 사온 걸 옮겨 심었다. 까먹고 있었는데 아마존에서 한국 깻잎 씨앗을 살 수 있었다. 한국 아삭이 고추 씨앗을 구하기는 어려운 것 같다. ㅠㅠ

Around early March, when it was kind of too early to spread lettuce seeds, I just went ahead and spread Korean lettuce seeds thinking 'They would sprout when they can lol'. And they did! Lettuce is the easiest and most useful crop. The Perlilla leaf seadlings are from Huntsville International Market. I forgot this, I could buy Korean perlilla leaf seeds from Amazon. But it's hard to find Korean banana pepper seeds.

알디에서 사온 튤립은 일주일도 안가서 시들어버렸다. 다시는 튤립 안사와야지; 나팔백합도 피어가는 중이다.

The tulips from Aldi didn't even last for a week. I won't buy them anymore !

위부터 차례로 잉글리시 데이지, 수국, 란타나의 모습이다.

화단을 찾아온 깜짝 손님! 작년 뒷마당에서 고추랑 깻잎 키웠을 때 놀러오던 아기 청개구리 삼총사가 있었는데 그 중 한 녀석인 것 같았다. 이 개구리 이름은 Gray Tree Frog 라고 어렸을 때 초록빛을 띄다가 어른이 되면 회색이 되는 개구리인가보더라. 그리고 무려 10년이나 넘게 산다고 한다.

Look who's here! There were baby frogs in my garden last year, and I'm pretty sure this is one of them! This frog is Gray Tree Frog. When they are young, they look green and turn gray getting older. It can live more than TEN YEARS!!!

이거는 아마존에서 야심차게 구매한 만리향이라는 나무다. 영어로는 Sweet Olive Tree 라고 한다. 만리까지 향이 퍼져서 붙혀진 이름이라는데 맡아본 사람마다 그 향기가 정말 좋다고 해서 궁금해서 키워보기로 했다. ㅋㅋ

This tree is a sweet olive tree. Its Korean name is "10,000 Li Scent Tree". Li was an old distance unit. 10,000 Li is about 24200 miles. So it means you can smell its scent away from 24,200 miles. Every person who smelled this tree before complimented the scent. I was so curious that I decided to have one -_-!

딱히 비료도 필요 없는 상추와 깻잎 키우기. 작년에 깻잎 모종을 많이 사서 나중에는 감당이 안 될 정도로 자라나서 이번에는 딱 두개만 사서 심었다. 의외로 성장이 더딘 것 같아 걱정이었다.

Neither lettuce nor perlilla leaf need fertilizing. Last year I had too many perlilla leaf seedlings and they grew crazily. So this year I only bought two. It seemed like they weren't growing as fast as last ones did.

토네이도 경보가 울렸지만 그렇게 심한 편은 아니었다. 그래서 비도 많이 내리는 김에 지렁이분변토를 깻잎이랑 상추 화분에 뿌려주었다.

We got a tornado alert, it was not very bad. I put some earthworm casting soil into both pots while it was raining.

이건 시아빠가 부탁한 분묘 나무 씨앗을 심어둔 화분인데 발아시키기가 어렵지만 도전 중이다. ㅠㅠ

This is a pot I put Father in law's bonsai tree seeds in. It's tricky to make it sprout. I'm trying!

주말 아침 상추에 삼겹살 싸먹으려고 첫 수확을 해보기로 했다!

On a weekend morning, I wanted to grill some Korean BBQ and wrap it with my Korean lettuce.

그새 이렇게 자라나다니!! 엄청난 속도다.

Look how big they were! I harvested some lettuce.

깻잎도 지렁이 분변토 덕분인지 조금은 더 자란 모습이다.

The perlilla leafs seemed a little taller. maybe it was because of the earthworm casting soil.

만리향 나무는 잘 자라고 있는 것 같고 시아빠 씨앗은 아직 발아하지 않은 상태다.

Sweet olive tree is growing well. And the bonsai tree seeds hadn't sprouted yet.

오늘 찍은 깻잎 모습! 조금 더 자란 것 같다. 깻잎은 민트과라 해서 한번 자라면 뿌리도 엄청 많이 내려서 처치 곤란할 수도 있다.

어제 상추 잎을 많이 땃다고 생각했는데 하루 사이 또 부쩍 자란 모습이다.

Even though I harvested some of the lettuce, they looked even bigger today.

백합 꽃이 다 진 수레 화단은 조금은 휑한 모습이다. 백합을 뽑고 다른 식물을 심을 지 고민 중이다. 가드닝 포스팅의 마지막은 역시나 깨끗한 미국 알라바마의 하늘.

After all the lilies were gone, my wagon looks a little empty. I'm trying to decide whether to pull the lily and plant a different flower or not. Last picture is always of the sky in Alabama :)
