몽고메리에도 적지 않은 한인들이 살고 있는데 그래서인지 한식음식점도 쉽게 찾을 수 있었다. 그 중 옐프에 좋은 후기가 많았던 소공동 순두부에 가보기로 했다. 소공동은 서울 명동 근방에 있는 동네인데 내가 미국에 오기 전 일한 롯데면세점도 소공동에 위치해있다. 소공동 순두부는 미국 전역에 지점을 가지고 있는 프랜차이즈 한식점이었다. 우리가 간 곳은 몽고메리 지점.

There are many Koreans living in Montgomery. It's easy to find Korean restaurants there. We wanted to check out So Gong Dong Tofu since it has good reviews on Yelp. So Gong Dong is an area name near Myeong Dong. The department store I worked in was located in So Gong Dong too. So Gong Dong Tofu & BBQ has many branches all over the US. The branch we went to was Montgomery's.

밖에서 건물을 봤을 때 짐작했던 것보다 그 내부는 훨씬 더 컸다. 따로 분리되어 프라이빗한 분위기를 주는 공간들도 있었다. 우리는 안내해주신 자리에 착석했다. 주문을 하기 전 여러가지 반찬을 내어주셨는데 하나같이 싱싱하고 맛이 좋았다. 나는 해물섞어 순두부찌개를 주문했고 남편은 소고기 불고기를 시켰다. 순두부찌개는 돌솥밥이 함께 나오고 불고기는 일반 공기밥으로 나온다.

The inside was bigger than we thought. There were private rooms too. We sat where we were led to. They served many side dishes. I liked all of them. They were fresh and good. I ordered Seafood & Beef Tofu stew and Skylar ordered beef Bulgogi. Tofu Stew is served with rice in a clay pot and Bulgogi is with normal rice.

역시 한식집이란 걸 느끼는 게 무료 와이파이를 제공하는 것과 호출벨이 있어서 기다림없이 서버를 부를 수 있다는 것. 미국에 와서 기다림에 익숙해진 후로 호출벨을 누르기도 뭔가 부담스러운 느낌이 들게 되었다.

Seeing a service bell makes you realize you are at a Korean restaurant. Also they let you use free wifi. (I would say it's part of Korean culture.) Since I got used to waiting on a server at a restaurant, I didn't feel free to press the bell.

반찬이 너무 맛있어서 메인 메뉴가 나오기 전에 계속 먹었더니 나름 배가 불러왔다. 기다림도 잠시, 팔팔 끓는 순두부 찌개와 엄청난 양의 불고기가 서빙됐다. 순두부 찌개는 매운맛 정도도 고를 수 있었는데 보통맛으로 시켰더니 맵지 않고 적당했다. 남편도 순두부 찌개를 좋아하는데 내가 해물 순두부를 시키는 바람에 생선맛이 난다며 한 모금 먹더니 더는 못먹겠나보더라. 

The side dishes were so good and authentic. I ate a lot till the main dishes got served. We got a Boiling tofu stew and huge amount of Bulgogi soon. I could choose a spiciness for my tofu stew, I chose regular. So it was not too spicy. Skylar likes tofu stew but he didn't like this one because I put seafood in it.

남편이 주문한 불고기도 돌솥판에 나왔는데 남편이 자기가 여태 먹었던 불고기 중 최고라며 극찬했다. 나도 한입 맛보니 정말 맛있는 불고기였다. 먹는 도중 서버 분이 오셔서 돌솥밥에 있는 밥을 옮기면 뜨거운 물을 부어주신다고 하셨다. 그렇게 누룽지를 만들게 되었고 스카일러도 인생 최초로 누룽지를 먹어봤는데 좋아했다.

Skylar's Bulgogi was served in a clay pot. (It keeps food hot longer.) He said the Bulgogi was the best lol. I tried some and it was really good. While I was eating my food, the server asked me if I wanted him to pour hot water into the clay pot. So I could have Noo-Lung-Gi (Plain Rice with Hot Water) Skylar tried it for the first time. He liked it! I told him that Koreans eat this for refreshing or to get over a hangover the morning after you drink.

날계란을 톡 까서 끓는 순두부찌개에 넣고, 잘 저어주었다. 사실 난 개인적으로 계란을 나중에 넣는 걸 별로 안좋아하지만 남편한테 어떻게 먹는건지 보여주려고 한번 해봤다. ㅋㅋ 반찬이 떨어져가자 친절하시게도 새로운 나물 반찬을 내어주셨는데 나물 자체가 굉장히 신선했다. 무슨 나물이라고 말씀해주셨는데 기억이 안난다. ㅠㅠ

I cracked an egg into the stew and stir it well. I don't really like adding a raw egg after tofu stew is served. But I just wanted to show Skylar how to do it. The owner noticed I was almost finishing the egg plant side dish, she served me green side dish with tofu. It was so fresh without bitter taste.

그렇게 마지막까지 그릇을 쓱싹 비워내고 계산서를 기다리고 있다가 혹시 계산은 카운터에서 하는건가 싶어서 여쭤보니 그렇다고 하셨다. 한국은 계산을 카운터에서 하고 미국은 계산서를 가져다주니 미국에 있는 한식집에 가면 늘 헷갈린다. 계산할 때 팁을 포함해드릴까요 라고 물어보시길래 그냥 내가 적겠다고 했다. 사실 이런 것도 부담스럽지만 가끔 팁을 터무니없게 주거나 아예 안주는 사람들때문에라도 이런 방식을 고수하시는 건가 싶었다.

We finished our food and waiting for the check. Skylar asked me to ask the owner if we are supposed to pay at the counter. She said yes. Because in every Korean restaurant you pay at their counter (Because we don't tip. we don't have to wait for check.) So sometimes Korean american restaurants copy that way. We walked to the counter and the guy asked me if I wanted him to add tip automatically. I said I would write it.

진짜 맛있었던 몽고메리 한식 맛집, 소공동 순두부. 조만간 다시 들릴 것 같다.
