18년 연말결산

Life in Alabama in 2018

어느새 한 해가 저물어 2019년이 되었다는 게 믿기지가 않는다. 그래서 그동안 밀리고 밀린 일상 기록들을 한꺼번에 올려보려고 한다.

New year has begun. I thought I should post on my blog to catch you up.

Bella

벨라가 새 집으로 온 지 일주일 조금 넘어서 눈에 눈꼽이 많이 끼기 시작하고 급기야는 충혈이 되어 눈을 잘 뜨지도 못하는 지경에 이르렀다. 그 날이 일요일이라 주변 동물병원은 여는 곳이 없어 구글로 일요일에 여는 동물병원을 찾아 차로 한시간 거리인 동물병원을 찾아갔다. 나는 애완동물을 길러본 적이 없어서 동물병원은 나에게도 생소한 곳이었는데 미국의 동물병원 대기실은 그야말로 대형견 집합소 같은 곳이었다. 그 와중에 낮잠을 못잔 벨라는 캐리어에서 밀린 잠을 자느라 바빠서 오히려 내가 더 무서워했던 것 같다. 수의사는 벨라가 너무 예쁘다고 통성명하기도 전에 자기 동료 수의사한테 벨라 보여주면 안되냐고 했고, 그 동료의사분은 단번에 벨라가 순종 아메리칸숏헤어라는 걸 알아보았다. 아무튼 다행이도 벨라는 심하게 아픈 게 아니었고, 새 집에 올 때 스트레스를 받기 때문에 면역력이 떨어져 눈병에 걸린 거라고 했다. 항생제 주사 한방과 안약과 물약을 처방받아 5일동안 꾸준히 치료한 결과 금방 나을 수 있었다.

Bella's eye were getting bad a week or two weeks after moving into our house. Her eyes eventually turned red and she barely could open her eyes. It was Sunday so none of vets in our town were open. So I googled to find any vet open near on the day. There were some an hour away so we took Bella to this vet. Come to think of it, it was my first time to go to a vet since I didn't have pets before. It seemed like I was more scared by the giant dogs at the vet than Bella in the carrier. She was busy catching up her sleep. The vet took Bella to show her coworker how beautiful she is even before saying hi to us. The guy instantly knew that Bella is a purebred American Short Hair. Anyway, it wasn't too bad. Bella got a shot and some medicine for infected eyes. We took care of her giving her medicine for five days.

Bella's eyes were infected.

Birthday

12월은 내 생일이 있는 달이다. 평소였더라면 근사한 레스토랑에서 외식을 했거나 당일치기 여행이라도 갔을텐데 이젠 떨어지기에 너무 소중한 벨라가 우리집에 있어서 되도록이면 외출을 삼가하려고 한다. 그래서 남편이 저녁 생일상을 차려준다고 해서 봉골레 파스타를 만들어달라고 했다. 미국 남부 앨라배마 주에서 25년 넘게 살아본 이 소년에게 '봉골레파스타'란 생소하기 그지없는 단어였다. 그래도 퍼블릭스에서 싱싱한 해산물을 구할 수 있어서 조개를 사와 해감을 하고, 동영상을 열심히 따라하며 만든 남편표 봉골레 파스타는 한번도 먹어보지도 않은 사람 치고 꽤 괜찮게 만들어냈다.

My birthday is in December. We would have went out to eat at a fancy restaurant but we are trying not to leave Bella alone too long. So Skylar asked me what I wanted him to cook for me and I wanted Vongole pasta. Skylar who had lived in Alabama for 25 years in a row, had no idea what Vongole pasta was like. He watched a video to make it for me when he didn't even know how it's supposed to taste like, he bought fresh clams from Publix and washed them so well watching the video, and it turned out pretty good for the first trial.

Costco Membership

드디어 미루고 미뤄오던 코스트코 멤버쉽에 가입했다. 크리스마스가 다가오면서 선물 사냥을 나가기에 코스트코 만큼 좋은 곳도 없다. 6만원을 내고 UPS에서 코스트코 멤버십을 신청하면 우편으로 코스트코에서 사용할 수 있는 6만원권 쿠폰을 보내준다. 말하자면 퐁퐁이나 키친타월 같은 생필품 등을 살 수 있는 쿠폰 말이다. 아무튼 헌츠빌에 코스트코가 있는데 전체적인 매장 레이아웃이나 진열은 샘스클럽이나 다름없다. 나랑 남편이 처음 느낀 샘스클럽과의 다른 점은 인종이 훨씬 더 다양했다. 샘스클럽은 거의 백인위주 고객들이 많다는 걸 코스트코를 가보니 느끼게 되었다. 또 코스트코에는 한국 비비고 만두, 냉동 불고기 식품, 농심 생생우동이랑 김도 있었고 해산물 코너도 마련되어 있어 나는 그 곳에서 생굴 한 컵을 샀는데 내가 먹어본 굴 중에 진짜 제일 큰 굴이었다. 만원 주고 산 필라 자켓도 너무 맘에 듬

I had wanted to join Costco membership for a long time. We finally decided to buy the membership card to buy Christmas gifts there. We bought the membership through UPS. They offer you 60$ Costco item coupons such as dish detergent and paper towels. When we walked in Costco in Huntsville, the first thing we both noticed was that customers were much more diverse than Sam's. We realized that actually Sam's club mostly had white people. Costco had Korean dumplings, frozen Bulgogi, noodles (Udon) and Gim (Seaweed snack) It even had a seafood counter with bunch of seafood! I spotted cups of raw oysters and couldn't help not buying one. Even though it says small sized oysters but these are the biggest in the world. I bought this Fila jacket only for 10$!

Holidays

남편과 나는 크리스마스 선물교환을 하는데 이번 년도 12월에는 가구를 사서 큰 선물을 줄 수는 없었지만 스위스 여행 가서 쓰라고 괜찮은 레이밴 선글라스와 블랙박스, 르크루제 에스프레소 컵을 선물해줬고 남편은 나에게 에어팟을 사줬다. 내가 뉴욕여행 때 뉴요커들이 에어팟 쓰는 모습을 보고 그렇게 갖고 싶다고 했던 걸 기억하고는 드디어 내 손에 쥐어줬다는 ㅎ 아주 아주 마음에 든다.

2018년 마지막 날을 기념하기 위해 저녁은 조금 특별하게 차려먹고 싶어서 이번에도 퍼블릭스에서 생새우를 사서 감바스를 만들어 먹었다. 남편이 내일 당장 새해 모임을 우리 집에서 해서 뭘 또 굳이 요리하냐고 했지만 막상 촛불도 키고 멋진 음식도 차려놓고 하니 본인이 더 좋아했다. 촛불에 새해 맞이 소원을 빌었는데 남편은 더 나은 남편이 될 거라고 했다. ㅋㅋ :)

새해 모임을 우리 신혼집에서 갖게 되었는데 우리 부부는 집들이를 한 적이 없어서 사실상 처음 집을 친척들에게 보여주는 것이나 다름없었다. 다들 집이 너무 너무 예쁘다고 칭찬해주셨고, 나는 한국 음식 두가지를 하고 남편도 크록팟을 이용해 만든 소고기 스튜와 맥앤치즈를 만들어서 대접했다. 벨라가 한꺼번에 많은 사람들을 만나본 적이 없어 걱정을 했는데 나름 크게 스트레스 받지 않고 잘 지낸 것 같아서 다행이다.

Skylar and I bought Christmas gifts for each other. We spent a lot of money on furniture in December so we couldn't buy expensive gifts. I bought Rayban sunglasses for Skylar to wear in Switzerland, a dashcam, Le creuset espresso cups. And he gave me Airpods. I really wanted them in New York City after so many New Yorkers were using them lol. I am very happy with them.

To celebrate the last day of 2018, we made Gambas. Skylar was being skeptical about cooking a day before the family gathering. But when I lit up candles and place the dish, he was the one who liked the atmosphere than me. We made wishes for the new year, he wished that he would be a better husband in 2019.

We had a family gathering on New Year's at our house. We didn't have a house warming party so this was our actual party inviting family. They loved our house! I prepared two Korean dishes and Skylar made beef stew using a Crockpot and made Mac & Cheese. I was concerning Bella might get too stressed with a crowd because she hadn't met that many people at once. And she did well!

Decorations

신혼집이 내가 좋아하는 가구들과 물건들로 하나 둘씩 채워져 나가는 걸 볼 때, '아 이맛에 돈 버는 구나' 동기부여가 팍팍 된다. ㅋㅋ 최근에 수건걸이를 장만했는데 굉장히 단단하고 무거운 금속재질에 새 장식이 되어있는 정말 멋있는 수건걸이다. 안그래도 휴지걸이랑 작은 수건걸이를 추가로 사서 조만간 집에 도착할 예정이다. 또 예전에 잠깐 언급했지만 원목 식탁도 사서 지금 노트북 올려두고 포스팅하고 있는데, 이 걸 위해 내가 예전에 큰 식탁을 가지고 싶었었다. 카페처럼 노트북 놓고 타이핑할 식탁. 아~ 너무 맘에 든다. ㅋㅋ 또 식탁과 어울리는 커피테이블도 마련했는데 정말 마음에 든다. 또 멋있는 올리브색 의자도 사서 이젠 손님들이 와도 충분히 앉을 공간이 있다. 아직도 사야할 가구들이 많지만 가격대가 있어도 내가 정말 마음에 드는 가구들을 생각해뒀다가 하나씩 사는 거라서 만족도가 어마어마하다. *_*

I get motivated to work harder when I see my house filling with my favorite furniture. I bought this metal towel hanger with bird decorations. It looks very fancy! I have ordered a toilet paper holder and towel hook. As I mentioned my table before, I love it so much. I wished I had a nice big table to put my laptop on like a cafe, now I have it using my laptop on it. Also I've got a real nice coffee table that matches the dining table, and an olive color chair so we have enough chairs for people. There is still more furniture to buy, I am buying one by one when I am 100% sure about it and when I can afford it. So I am very happy with my furniture.
