Gardening Diary in August

Angelique Tulips, Kwanzan Cherry Tree & Limelight Hydrangea

 

 

 

8월-9월 초 동안 나름 정원관리를 한 기록이 꽤나 쌓여서 긴 포스팅이 될 것 같다.

I have done gardening during August and early September, this post will be pretty long.

 

01. 버섯, 잡초와의 전쟁 Mushrooms in my yard

 

 

정체 모를 버섯들이 계속해서 우리 마당에 등장한다. 손으로 뽑았을 때는 버섯 포자가 공기 중에 퍼졌는지 뽑은 후에도 계속 새로운 버섯이 발견되었다. 제초제를 사용하니, 순식간에 색이 갈색으로 변하면서 죽어갔다. 그런데도 아직도 있는게 함정...

There were unidentified mushrooms in our yard. When I pulled them by hand, their spores must have spread everywhere. New ones kept coming up. So I sprayed weedkiller over the mushrooms, they instantly turned brown and started dying. But we still have some :(

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

앞마당 잔디밭에 최근 저런 모양의 잡초가 발견되는데 잔디보다 색이 짙어서 멀리서 보면 군데 군데 얼룩진 것처럼 보인다. 손으로 일일이 뽑아내려고 했지만 너무 많아서 역부족... 

Recently we have that kind of weed in our lawn. It has darker color than grass. From a distance, it makes the lawn spotty. I tried to pull them myself, there are too many of them.

 

 

 

 

 

 

02. 나무 다듬기(헷지 트리밍)  Hedge Trimming

 

 

 

 

 

정원 관리에는 다양한 장비가 필요한데 헷지트리머는 특히나 마당에 관목나무가 있다면 필수다. 초보가드너라서 능숙하게 다듬어내지는 못하지만 비약적인 발전 중

It takes quite a few tools for gardening. This one is called hedge trimmer. If you have any hedge trees in your flower bed, this tool is essential. I was struggling to trim them well at first, but I am getting better and better at this. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

이 나무를 한국어로 뭐라 부르는지 모르겠다. 측백나무라고 부르면 되나? 아무튼 이 나무는 잎이 살랑살랑거려서 트리머로 깍기 좀 더 까다로운 면이 있다. 그래도 나름 나무 꼭대기는 뾰족하게 다듬기 성공! (맨 위 썸네일 사진이 애프터~!)

This arborvitae tree is trickier than the other kind. The leaves are so light, it won't stay up when I tried to trim. But I got to make them way better.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

03. 새로 온 식물들 New Plants for my garden

 

 

 

 

 

내 마당에 나무를 직접 심는 일도 있다니, 감격적... 꼭 벚꽃나무를 심어보고 싶었는데 콴잔 벚나무라고 겹벚나무라서 꽃망울이 무척 크다. 보통 나무는 가격이 꽤나 나가는데 이 웹사이트는 도매전문인지? 가격이 저렴해서 냉큼 주문했음. 벨라가 흙냄새에 관심을 보였다.

I was so excited to plant a tree in my property. (had never done this before.) I really wanted a cherry tree in my yard. I found this unique cherry tree with multiple-layered cherry flowers. It is a Kwanzan cherry tree. I bought the tree from this website that seemed like a wholesaler? The price was very reasonable for that kind of trees. Bella was interested in the soil smell.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

차례대로 은방울 꽃과 키 작은 빨간 백합. 은방울 꽃은 뿌리로 배달되어서 신기했다. 사진은 미처 못 찍었는데, 우리 집 화단 구석에 있는 나무 아래에 심었다. 그쪽이 좀 음지라서 잘 맞을 것 같았다.

And I also bought these. Top one is white lily of valley and the bottom one is red carpet border lilies. I forgot to take photos of planting the white lily of valley. I planted them underneath the tree in the corner of my flower bed. That plant likes to grow in half-shadow. It's shady there.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

요거는 라임라이트라는 목수국(나무수국)이다. 이번 8월 말 시카고 여행에서 도시 조경에 대해 엄청나게 감탄하고 왔는데, 특징 중 하나가 라임라이트가 여기저기 많이 심겨져 있었다. 그동안 어떤 종류의 수국을 살까 고민이 많았는데, 라임라이트는 노지월동이 가능하고 라임색으로 핀 꽃이 흰색으로 변해 나중에는 분홍색 단풍이 드는 점이 큰 매력으로 다가왔다.

This hydrangea is Limelight, a tree version of hydrangea. I was so impressed by Chicago landscaping during our Chicago trip in August. They had limelight everywhere. I was thinking a lot about what kind of hydrangea to plant in my flower bed, Chicago gave me an answer. Limelight is drought tolerant and doesn't need protection for winter. The flowers are light green color and turn white, eventually it has pink foliage.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

가드닝하려고 주문한 식물들을 보니 내 취향은 꽃이 크고 화려한 걸 좋아하는 것 같다. 이 튤립도 겹튤립이라고 작약같은 잎을 가지고 있어 일반 튤립과는 모양이 좀 다르다. 이름은 안젤리크 튤립이고 연분홍색 꽃이 핀다.

Come to think of it, I must like big and multiple-layered flowers. This tulip is like that too. It is Angelique tulips that has a peony looking.

04. 콴잔 겹벚꽃 나무 심기 Planting a Kwanzan Cherry Tree

 

 

 

 

 

 

이 벚나무가 배송왔을 때 흙 없이 뿌리가 다 드러난 상태에서 비닐이 씌워져 있었는데 스카일러가 자꾸 흙 구덩이 파는 걸 미뤄서 결국 뿌리에 곰팡이가 생기고 말았다. 나름 빡빡 문대서 씻기긴 했는데, 솔직히 살아있는지는 나도 잘 모르겠다. 가지가 힘없이 부러지면 죽은 거라던데 또 그렇지는 않은 것 보니 내년 봄에나 가서야 생사여부(?)를 알 수 있을 듯 하다.

When this tree was delivered, it was bare-root with no soil covered in a bag. Skylar put off planting this tree for 3 days. Eventually it caused this tree to be moldy. He tried to wash it off, but I am not sure if this tree is alive lol. Google says, when you bend twigs without effort, if it snaps off, it means dead. But this tree wasn't like that. So I will get to know for sure if this tree is still okay next spring.

스카일러가 나무가 많으면 잔디깍기 힘들다고 나무 심기 반대한 걸, 그럼 벚나무 하나만 울타리 근처에 심으면 잔디 깍는 거 방해 안될 거 아니냐 했더니, 또 콴잔나무 특성상 몸집이 엄청 커지기 때문에 그러면 울타리 넘어 남의 땅에 침범할 수 있다고(근데 울타리 넘어서도 우리 땅임;;), 암튼 그러길래 그럼 잔디 알아서 깍으라고 하고 최종 부지 선정을 여기로 했다!!

Skylar hated to have any trees in our yards. I said, we can plant a cherry tree close to the back fences so it won't bother him mowing. And he said, this cherry tree will get really big, it will eventually go over the fences. I said well it's technically our property over the fences. Anyways we decided to plant the tree there. Skylar is going to deal with it lol

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

앙상한 벚나무를 심고 물을 흠뻑 주었다. 콴잔 벚나무는 꽃이 먼져 피고 잎이 생겨서 봄에는 핑크색이 가득, 여름에는 푸른 빛, 그리고 가을에는 단풍까지 들어 3계절 내내 다른 색으로 갈아입는 것을 보는 재미가 있다고 한다. 나중에 원래 작년 집 구매할 때 부터 있었던 울타리 근처 나무들을 다 베어버릴 예정이다.

We watered a lot around the tree. Kwanzan will bloom first and make leaves later. In spring, it will have pink flowers and in summer, it will have green leaves and in fall, the leaves will turn red. I love plants that have foliage! It makes everything more interesting. We also want to take the other trees down along the fences someday...

 

 

 

 

 

 

05. 라임라이트 수국, 안젤리크 튤립 심기 Planting Limelight Hydrangea and Angelique Tulips

 

 

 

 

 

이 자리는 저번 포스팅에서 잡초가 아닌 잔디들로 점령당한 공간인데 내가 진짜 일일히 호미로 파헤치고 뿌리마다 제초제 뿌려서 결국 박멸에 성공했다. T^T 포스팅에 실린 게 다가 아니었음... 잔디가 이렇게 끈질긴지 처음 알았다. 아무튼 이 공간에 드디어 주인이 생겼다.

This spot was fully covered with grass last time. I had to dig everywhere to get to the grass roots and sprayed weed killer directly on top of the roots. I finally got rid of all of them. IT WASN'T EASY AT ALL. This spot finally welcomed right owners now.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

여담이지만 사진을 내가 찍어서 보통 스카일러가 대부분의 정원 일을 하는 것 같은데 그렇지 않다. 가드닝은 여보 하비인데 왜 자기가 해야하냐고 그런다. 그럼 내가 너는 내 허비니까 내 하비 도와줘야지 ㅡㅡ 이래도 아주 가~끔 돕는다. 

By the way it seems like Skylar is very dedicated to me with gardening, but not really. He says, "Why do I need to help you all the time, when gardening is your HOBBY?", I say "It's because you are my HUBBY. Can't you help with your wife's HOBBY?" So I would say he helps me not very often.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

땅을 파고 수국이 들어갈 만한 자리에 물을 가득 부어준다.

다짜고짜 수국 머리채 잡고 뽑아낼라하길래, 그 전에 화분을 꽉 꽉 눌러서 빼야한다고 알려주었다 ^^;;;; 라임라이트가 비명 질렀을 듯.

Skylar was pulling the hydrangea by the leaves. I was like "you should massage the pot before pulling ^^;;;"

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

라임라이트는 늦여름-가을까지 꽃이 필 것이고 튤립은 봄에 피어서 이 화단을 계절별로 돌아가며 꾸며줄 것이다. 남편이 수국 머리채 잡고 심을 동안 나는 양파껍질 벗기든 튤립 껍질을 다 벗겨주었다. 냄새가 좀 양파냄새 나긴 하던데...

Limelight's bloom time is late summer through autumn. Tulips will bloom in spring. They will take turns to make this flower bed lively. While Skylar was pulling the limelight out of the pot, I peeled skins of the tulips. They did smell like onions.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

수국 다 심었으니 자기 할 일 다 했다고 줄행랑 친 남편. 요즘 자기 "하비" 게임하느라 바쁨 ㅋ 작은 모종삽들고 튤립 들어갈 자리를 파서 심어주었다.

He ran away as he finished planting the hydrangea, saying "it's time for my hobby (game)". I planted each tulip bulb with a trowel.

 

 

 

 

 

06. 주말 삽질 Shoveling on a weekend day

 

 

 

 

 

시카고 도시 조경을 보고 무슨 바람이 든 건지, 갑자기 띄엄띄엄하던 저 사철 관목나무들을 한데 모아서 네모난 모양으로 키워보고 싶단 생각이 들었다. 분명 남편한테 말하면 "아 지금도 그대로 이뻐~"(사실 그렇게 나쁘진 않았음...)하고 절대 안 도와줄 걸 알기 때문에 삽질에 도전했다. 맨 왼쪽 관목을 오른쪽으로 옮기고, 반대 방향에 있던 무의미했던 관목 2그루를 뽑아 사이사이에 넣었다.

 together. I knew Skylar wouldn't help me with this and probably would say "it looks good how it is now." (I agree it wasn't bad.) So I decided to pull some of them myself.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

옮기고 보니 저 가운데에 공간이 좀 비는데 빨리 자라나서 채워주면 좋겠다. 목 마른 자가 우물 판다고 이걸 해내다니 나도 참 근성있나보다.

This is after I did the work. I hope the gap will be filled soon. It wasn't easy and Skylar even told me to reconsider about my hobby watching me sweating a lot -_-

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

아까 2그루 뽑힌 게 저 고추나무 수레화분 있는 곳에 있었다. 가운데 짙은 색 멀치는 다른 곳에서 퍼와서 땜빵한 거라 물기가 좀 더 있어서 색이 짙다. 이번 겨울 지나고 나면 멀치도 새로 싹 갈아줘야 할 것 같다. 관목나무 부스러기는 어떻게 처리하나 했더니 알고보니 우리가 머리 자를 때 미용실에서 천 둘러주는 것처럼 그렇게 바닥에 천을 깔고 깍아주는 거였더라.. 어쩐지, 안그래도 제일 어두운 색의 내 멀치가 더 어수선해보인다.

The two pulled plants were from the right side of the tree. The reason why there are darker mulches in a circle, it's because I scooped some from other part of flower bed to cover the ground. I learned people put a tarp around hedge trees before trimming them. So they can easily throw away clippings. We need to replace the munchies.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

키가 커질 수국 나무 근처에 뭘 심을까 했다가 라임라이트보다는 키가 살짝 작은 꿩의비름이라는 꽃이 너무 예뻐서 주말 오후 미국 가드닝 샵인 로우스에 들려 모종을 구입해 왔다. 알고보니 다육이 종류였던 꿩의 비름은 라임라이트와 마찬가지로 월동이 가능하고 (중요) 가뭄에도 강하고, 내가 환장(?)하는 단풍이 든다는 것이다. 단풍드는 게 왜 좋냐면, 시간/계절의 흐름에 따라 내 정원이 알아서 색을 바꾸기 때문에 적은 노동력으로 좀 더 다양한 화단을 감상할 수 있다는 것. 

I wanted to plant something else next to the hydrangea. Autumn joy sedum was perfect for that. We went to Lowes and got 2 pots of it. Autumn joy sedum is a succulent and drought tolerant and has a foliage as well. It turns pink in fall.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

여름에는 브로콜리 같았다가, 가을이 되면 분홍색으로 변한다. 저렇게 꽃망울이 작은 게 여러개 달려있는 식물은 호박벌이나 나비들이 정말 좋아한다. 로우스에서도 엄지손가락만한 호박벌들이 꿩의 비름 근처를 맴돌았다. 이쪽 화단은 이제 봄(튤립)-여름(수국, 꿩의비름)-가을(단풍든 수국, 단풍든 꿩의비름)까지 커버됐다.

This plant looks like a broccoli in summer and it changes the color to pink in fall. Little flowers attract bumble bees and butterflies. This part of flower bed will be decorated with tulips in spring, limelight and autumn joy sedum in summber and their foliage in fall.

화단에 많은 일이 있었지만, 아직 끝이 아니다~! 아직 배송이 안 온 작약과 노란 백합, 그리고 데이비드 오스틴 영국장미인 보스코벨이 기다리고 있단 점...

There were many things happened to my flower bed. Yet, there are more plants coming! Peony, yellow lilies and Englad rose, Boscobel.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

원래 노란 백합 오면 같이 심을려고 아껴둔 키 작은 빨간 백합을 심기로 했다. 계속 싹도 자라길래...

I was going to plant this red carpet border lilies with yellow lilies, but they were sprouting so I went ahead and planted them in the ground.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

이 백합은 키가 그렇게 안커서 작약을 배경으로 그 앞에 놓일 예정이다. 작약은 특히나 개화기간이 겨우 1주일?밖에 안되기 때문에, 그 공간을 심심하지 않게 꾸며줄 다른 꽃이 필요하다.

This red lily is short, and I am placing a peony in the back. Because peonies are beautiful they only bloom for about 1-2 weeks. So I needed something else to decorate the same area once peony fades away.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

그렇게 해서 빨간 백합은 다 심겼다~! 내가 백합 고를 때 중요한 건 "무향"에 가까워야한다는 것. 백합 냄새는 개인적으로 너무 강해서 별로 안 좋아하기 때문이다. 이 두 백합이 무향이라 다행이다!

Here's the red lilies planted. I don't like lily scent. It's too strong to me. The two lilies I picked don't have scent. :)
